Background: Moderate-severe traumatic brain injury (msTBI) stands as a prominent etiology of adult disability, with increased risk for cognitive impairment and dementia. Although some recovery often occurs within the first year post-injury, predicting long-term cognitive outcomes remains challenging, partly due to the significant pathophysiological heterogeneity of TBI, including acute cerebrovascular injury. The primary aim of our recently funded study, cerebral autoregulation, brain perfusion, and neurocognitive outcomes after traumatic brain injury (CAPCOG-TBI), is to determine if acute cerebrovascular dysfunction after msTBI measured using multimodal non-invasive neuromonitoring is associated with cognitive outcome at 1-year post-injury.

However, little evidence is available on young adults. We investigated the associations of high BP with brain volumes and cortical thickness in healthy young adults.

However, little evidence is available in healthy young adults. We investigated the associations between high BP and WM microstructural integrity in young adults.

Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine whether the use of a monoexponential model attributes initial fluctuations of MCAv at the start of exercise as a time delay (TD). Twenty-three adults (10 women, 23.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFLung inflammation is a hallmark of Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in severely ill patients and the pathophysiology of disease is thought to be immune-mediated. Mast cells (MCs) are polyfunctional immune cells present in the airways, where they respond to certain viruses and allergens, often promoting inflammation. We observed widespread degranulation of MCs during acute and unresolved airway inflammation in SARS-CoV-2-infected mice and non-human primates.

Therefore, our purpose was to compare cerebrovascular responses in males and females throughout a graded exercise test (GXT). Twenty-six participants (13 Females and 13 Males, 24 ± 4 yrs.

However, most studies examine cognitive performance following, not during, exercise. Therefore, our aim was to examine the relationship between EF and exercise intensity.

The purpose of this study is to use a large dataset of milk composition from donors to a milk bank to: (1) describe the macronutrient variability in human milk and how it contributes to the ability to meet the protein and calorie targets for the preterm infant using fortification with commercially available multi-nutrient fortifiers; (2) assess how temporal versus subject effects explain macronutrient variability; (3) determine how macronutrient variability contributes to the nutrient distribution in pooled donor milk.
Methods: This is a retrospective, observational study that analyzes the macronutrient data of 1,119 human milk samples from 443 individual donors to a milk bank.
Extensive evidence points to a role for GABAergic signaling in the amygdala in mediating the effects of alcohol, including presynaptic changes in GABA release, suggesting effects on GABAergic neurons. However, the majority of studies focus solely on the effects of alcohol on principal neurons. Here we demonstrate that δ-GABARs, which have been suggested to confer ethanol sensitivity, are expressed at a high density on parvalbumin (PV) interneurons in the basolateral amygdala (BLA).

We considered that rupatadine, a platelet-activating factor receptor inhibitor, might modulate dengue-associated vascular leak. The effects of rupatadine were assessed in vitro, and in a dengue model, which showed that rupatadine significantly reduced endothelial permeability by dengue sera in vitro, and significantly inhibited the increased haematocrit in dengue-infected mice with dose-dependency.

Supplementation with l-citrulline (Cit) has been shown to improve muscle oxygenation and oxygen uptake kinetics during moderate- to high-intensity cycling in young men. The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that Cit would improve oxygen uptake kinetics during walking in older and young adults. In a randomized, double-blind study, 26 (15 women, 11 men) adults between the ages of 20-35 years (n = 15) and 64-86 years (n = 11) completed 7-day periods of taking placebo and Cit (6 g/day) in a crossover manner.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFWhat is the central question of this study? Does short-term supplementation with l-citrulline in order to increase l-arginine improve exercise blood flow and peripheral dilatation responses to exercise in older adults? What is the main finding and its importance? l-Citrulline increased femoral blood flow by 11% and vascular conductance by 14% during lower-limb exercise in older men, whereas no changes were observed in older women. This modest improvement in bulk muscle blood flow in older men has implications for altering muscle metabolism that may result in enhanced exercise tolerance in older adults. l-Citrulline (Cit) increases l-arginine (Arg), the primary substrate for nitric oxide biosynthesis.

A UV-photopatterned thiol-ene mold was employed to produce long channels, which ranged from ∼40 to 200 μm in width and from ∼100 to 200 μm in depth, within a PEG-RGD hydrogel. Skeletal myoblasts (C2C12) were successfully cultured multiple cell layers deep within the channels.

The feature fidelity, as well as various aspects of the feature shape and quality, were assessed as functions of various resin attributes, particularly the exposure conditions, initiator concentration and inhibitor to initiator ratio. An optical technique was utilized to evaluate the feature fidelity as well as the feature shape and quality.

CdSe/ZnS quantum dots (QDs) exhibited fluorescence emission blue shifts when conjugated to antibodies or DNA aptamers that are bound to bacteria. The intensity of the shifted emission peak increased with the number of bound bacteria. Curiously, the emission was consistently shifted to approximately 440-460 nm, which is distinctly different from the major component of the natural fluorescence spectrum of these QDs.
