The hepatic galactose elimination kinetics was studied in eight anaesthetized pigs by hepatic vein catheterization. Galactose was given as successive constant intravenous infusions so that steady-state concentrations, ranging from 50 mumol/l to 8 mmol/l, were obtained. Concentrations were measured in a peripheral artery and in the hepatic veins.

The kinetics of sodium-dependent phenylalanine influx into samples of dog ileal and colonic mucosa in vitro have been compared and contrasted. The data were evaluated by non-linear regression analysis, on the assumption that the total influx of the amino-acid is made up of the sum of a single saturable and a diffusive component. In both mucosae, the principal effect of changing the sodium concentration in the incubation medium was to alter the Kt for phenylalanine influx.

We studied the effects of resistive breathing in 10 patients with long-standing, severe disabling COPD. Small increases in inspiratory resistive load resulted in diaphragmatic fatigue and failure in all patients. Fatigue was detected using the frequency spectrum analysis of an EMG signal obtained with surface electrodes.

1. Protein-fluorescence studies indicated that phospholipase C from Bacillus cereus is denatured in solutions of guanidinium chloride. The denaturation was not thermodynamically reversible and followed biphasic kinetics.

The effect of ethanol (5--25 mM) on the galactose elimination kinetics in the intact liver was studied in the isolated perfused pig liver, using the steady-state infusion technique. Ethanol reduced galactose-Vmax on average to 0.07 mmol/min kg liver in six experiments from 0.

Reasons for permanent tooth extractions were studied in a survey in South Australia conducted over a two week period in which 154 dentists participated, a response rate of 43 per cent. Of 2,387 teeth extracted from 1,104 patients, caries accounted for 52 per cent, periodontal and orthodontic causes 25.6 and 11.

A new method for monitoring the effect of muscle relaxants on the myoneural junction was tested in unanesthetized volunteers. Evoked electromyographic responses to stimulation, sweeping exponentially from 1 to 100 Hz over 10 seconds, were recorded from the hand and abdominal muscles. d-Tubocurarine (dTc) was given intravenously in incremental doses until head lift was abolished.

The relation between galactose elimination rates and blood concentrations in the isolated perfused pig liver was analyzed by a mathematical kinetic model. It assumes that the substrate, under steady-state conditions, is removed from the blood that flows through the sinusoids by an irreversible process which follows Michaelis-Menten (i.e.
