The objective of this study was to determine the reliability and validity of a Danish translation of the Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI), a self-report measure of perceived tinnitus handicap. The Danish version of the THI was administered to 50 patients reporting tinnitus as their primary complaint or secondary to hearing loss. Construct validity was assessed using tinnitus symptom rating scales, the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), the Tinnitus Coping Style Questionnaire (TCSQ), the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire (EPQ), and perceived tinnitus loudness and pitch.

The aims of the present study were to assess running economy in track runners and orienteers and to identify the factors responsible for any differences. The participants were 11 orienteers and 10 track runners of similar age, body mass, maximal oxygen uptake and training background. However, the orienteers included heavy terrain running in their daily training, whereas the track runners ran almost entirely on the roads and tracks.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the low-power laser on the treatment of tinnitus. In a randomized, prospective, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, either active or placebo low-power laser irradiation was given through the external acoustic meatus of the affected ear towards the cochlea. The active laser applied 50 mW (cw, 830 nm) over a period of 10 min per session.

This therapy is best understood as light activated chemotherapy. The chemotherapeutic agents, so-called photosensitizers, are relatively harmless without light. The photosensitizer is given systemically and is concentrated or retained in malignant tissue, the activating light is applied locally.

Greenland Inuit are a population with a low risk of cardiovascular disease. Recently, we stated that frequencies of potentially high risk alleles of the apolipoproteins, fibrinogen, factor V, glycoprotein IIIa and factor VII (FVII) genes have different allele frequencies in the Inuit when compared with Caucasian populations. We have extended this study and evaluated whether or not this was also true for the genetic polymorphisms of tissue-type plasminogen activator (t-PA), plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1), angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) and angiotensinogen in a group of 133 Greenland Inuit, aged 30-34 gamma.

The six major structural domains of 23 S rRNA from Escherichia coli, and all combinations thereof, were synthesized as separate T7 transcripts and reconstituted with total 50 S subunit proteins. Analysis by one and two-dimensional gel electrophoresis demonstrated the presence of at least one primary binding protein associated with each RNA domain and additional proteins assembled to domains I, II, V and VI. For all the combinations of two to five domains, enhanced assembly yields and/or new proteins were observed primarily to those transcripts containing either domains I+II or domains V+VI.

The hypothesis was tested that hemodilution is one of the determinants of the water immersion (WI)-induced natriuresis. Eight males were subjected to 3 h of 1) WI to the midchest (Chest), 2) WI to the neck combined with thigh cuff-induced (80 mmHg) venous stasis (Neck + stasis), and 3) a seated time control (n = 6). Central venous pressure and left atrial diameter increased to the same extent during Chest and Neck + stasis (P < 0.

Air embolism is a known but rare complication to endoscopic laser surgery. A case of nearly lethal air emboli as a complication to endoscopic laser surgery using a diode laser in the lungs is described. The case illustrates that even after prolonged resuscitation a successful outcome can be obtained.

1. The hypothesis was tested that in hydrated humans the release of arginine vasopressin and angiotensin II is suppressed by water immersion (WI) and that this is a mechanism of the immersion-induced diuresis and natriuresis. Seven male subjects on controlled sodium (65-75 mmol per 24 h for 4 days) and water intake were studied.

Background: As no clinical randomised studies have previously been performed comparing complications with the Ciaglia Percutaneous Dilatational Tracheostomy Introducer Set (PDT) and conventional surgical tracheostomy (TR), we designed a study with the aim of comparing the efficacy and safety of the two techniques.

Methods: Sixty patients selected for elective tracheostomy were randomised for either PDT (30 patients) or TR (30 patients). All patients had general anaesthesia and were ventilated with 100% oxygen.

Unlabelled: The purpose of this study was: 1) To evaluate the reproducibility of physiological parameters measured during cycle exercise, and 2) To validate the predictive capacity of physiological parameters related to endurance performance. Therefore, physiological variables were measured twice during cycling exercise in a group of seven cyclists. Each cycle exercise session was separated by one week and included progressive submaximal cycling followed by a 5-km time trial.

During water immersion in humans, the use of changes in hematocrit (Hct) and hemoglobin concentration (Hb) underestimates the relative changes in plasma volume (PV) as measured directly with Evans blue (EB). It is not known whether the same is the case during posture changes. Therefore, changes in PV were determined with an EB dilution technique in 10 males before, during, and after an acute posture change from seated to 6 degrees head-down tilt (HDT).

The hypothesis was tested that the abdominal area constitutes an important reservoir for central blood volume expansion (CBVE) during water immersion in humans. Six men underwent 1) water immersion for 30 min (WI), 2) water immersion for 30 min with thigh cuff inflation (250 mmHg) during initial 15 min to exclude legs from contributing to CBVE (WI+Occl), and 3) a seated nonimmersed control with 15 min of thigh cuff inflation (Occl). Plasma protein concentration and hematocrit decreased from 68 +/- 1 to 64 +/- 1 g/l and from 46.

Previous results from our laboratory demonstrate that changes in haematocrit (Hct) and haemoglobin concentration (Hb) underestimate the relative (%) change in plasma volume (PV) in seated subjects during simulation of weightlessness by water immersion. Therefore, we examined whether changes in Hct and Hb would accurately reflect the changes in PV in seven subjects during simulation of weightlessness by another model, 6 degrees head-down tilted bed rest (HDBR), for 42 days. Since we have previously observed unexpectedly high plasma levels of noradrenaline (NA) in astronauts during space flight, we also took the opportunity to measure this variable.

Multicellular organisms achieve the spatial and temporal regulation of genes during growth and development through the differential expression of transcription factors that associate in various combinations. In this paper, we report the physical association of B-ATF, a member of the AP1 family of basic leucine zipper transcription factors, with IFP 35, a leucine zipper protein that is translocated to the nucleus following the treatment of cells with interferons and for which no binding partners previously have been described. Our data suggest that the formation of B-ATF:IFP 35 heterodimers is an interferon-inducible event in specialized cell types expressing both proteins and that changes in AP1 mediated gene transcription likely play a role in the response of these cells to interferons.

We provide efficient and detailed procedures for construction, expression, and screening of comprehensive libraries of murine or human antibody Fab fragments displayed on the surface of filamentous phage. In addition, protocols for producing and using ultra-electrocompetent cells, for producing Fab phages from libraries, and for selecting antigen binders by panning are presented. The latter protocol includes a procedure for trypsin elution of bound phage.
