Ventricular septal defect (VSD) is a rare but severe complication of myocardial infarction (MI). Temporary mechanical circulatory support (MCS) can be used as a bridge to VSD closure, heart transplantation, or ventricular assist device. We describe the use of Impella device in this context based on a multicenter European retrospective registry (17 centers responded).

We aimed to assess the accuracy of a novel fully automated (Auto) artificial intelligence (AI) in view selection and biplane LVEF calculation compared to MBS-Echo, with cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMR) as reference.
Methods: Each of the 301 consecutive patients underwent CMR and Echo on the same day.
Background: It is currently unclear if active left ventricular (LV) unloading should be used as a primary treatment strategy or as a bailout in patients with cardiogenic shock (CS) treated with venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VA-ECMO).
Objectives: This study sought to evaluate the association between timing of active LV unloading and implantation of VA-ECMO with outcomes of patients with CS.
Methods: Data from 421 patients with CS treated with VA-ECMO and active LV unloading at 18 tertiary care centers in 4 countries were analyzed.
The key players of the hypoxic response are the hypoxia-inducible factors (Hif), whose α-subunits are tightly regulated by Prolyl-4-hydroxylases (PHD), predominantly by PHD2. Monocytes/Macrophages are involved in atherosclerosis but also restenosis and were found at hypoxic and sites of the lesion. Little is known about the role of the myeloid PHD2 in atherosclerosis and neointima formation.

This article provides data showing the overestimation of intrahospital mortality by APACHE II score in various subgroups of cardiogenic shock patients treated with a percutaneous left ventricular assist device. The data set includes additional baseline characteristics regarding age, pre-existing diseases, characteristics of coronary artery disease, characteristics of cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and hemodynamic parameter not included in the APACHE II score.

Different disease entities are predictable by using a specific factor called Diagnostic Category Weight (DCW). We aimed to validate the prognostic value of the APACHE II score in patients treated with a percutaneous left ventricular assist device because of refractory cardiogenic shock (CS).

Purpose: This study assessed the predictive role of early CRP in patients with STEMI.
The presence of a left ventricular (LV) thrombus is considered an absolute contraindication to transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) because of the very high embolic risk. We report a case of TAVI under complete protection of the cerebral arteries in a patient with a large LV thrombus, severely impaired LV function, and no surgical options. ().

We present a case series of patients undergoing high-risk percutaneous coronary intervention (HR-PCI) with mechanical circulatory support (MCS) guided by remote proctoring to gain insights into a streaming technology platform with regard to video/audio quality, visibility of all structural and imaging details, and delay in transmission. According to our experience, remote proctoring appears to be a reliable, quick, and resource-conserving way to disseminate, educate and improve MCS-supported HR-PCI with implications far beyond the COVID-19 pandemic.

Percutaneous left ventricular assist devices (pLVADs) can actively unload the left ventricle (LV), decreasing left ventricular end-diastolic pressure and wall tension, which are suspected parameters for the induction and maintenance of arrhythmias. The aim of this study was to describe effects of LV unloading on SHRD.

Thereby, an increased migration and proliferation of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) is mainly responsible for recurrent lumen narrowing. Previously, we showed that caveolin‑1 (Cav‑1) and endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) were directly involved in neointimal proliferation.

The aim of the study was to assess the long-term outcome of patients with AMICS depending on early initiation of Impella CP support prior to a percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI).
Methods: We retrospectively reviewed all patients who underwent PCI and Impella CP support between 2014 and 2016 for AMICS at our institution.
Vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMC) exhibit a dual role in progression and maintenance of arteriosclerosis. They are fundamental for plaque stability but also can drive plaque progression. During pathogenic vascular remodeling, VSMC transdifferentiate into a phenotype with enhanced proliferation and migration.

However, in ticagrelor-treated patients, the previous studies revealed significant clinical effects to platelet rich plasma (PRP) but poor response to pooled platelets (PP) as used in clinical routine. The aim of this study was to elucidate a potential pathomechanism to explain the poor response of ticagrelor to PP.

We firstly report a rhythmological stabilization through mechanical unloading of the left ventricle in a health patient who developed electrical storm after endo- and epicardiac re-ablation and who previously underwent 27 unsuccessful defibrillations. No evidence for a specific etiology of the rhythm disturbances was found.

Manual compression and thrombin injection are commonly used to occlude the pseudoaneurysms. However, in some cases these treatment options are inapplicable or unsuccessful.

Endothelial dysfunction is crucial in the initiation of atherosclerosis, which is associated with a lack of nitric oxide. The endothelial NO synthase (eNOS) is responsible for constitutive synthesis of NO and inhibited by caveolin-1 (Cav1). In the current study, we examined the influence on intima formation through single and combined deletion of eNOS and Cav1 with a focus on differentiation of local and systemic effects.
