The effectiveness of biochar as a soil amendment is highly dependent on local physical and chemical soil properties. Although the literature has already addressed biochar in several studies, there are still knowledge gaps. One the one hand, the relevant studies have primarily focused on field trials and small-scale applications at regional levels, overlooking the global perspective and regional differences.

Article Synopsis
  • Keratinocyte carcinomas, like basal and squamous cell carcinomas, are common and serious issues for solid organ transplant recipients, necessitating early detection and effective treatment strategies.
  • A Phase III clinical trial, called the SiroSkin trial, will assess the effectiveness of topical sirolimus in reducing skin cancer incidence among these patients compared to a placebo, involving 146 participants over 24 weeks of treatment and 18 months of follow-up.
  • The trial's results aim to enhance management approaches for skin cancers in solid organ transplant recipients and gather evidence on the cost-effectiveness of using topical sirolimus.

Background: Chemotherapy-induced cognitive impairment (CICI) is a well-recognized side effect of breast cancer treatment. However, prospective long-term evaluations of CICI using standardized neuropsychological tests are scarce.

Patients And Methods: This prospective longitudinal cohort study investigated cognitive dysfunction and its impact on quality of life and everyday functioning in patients with breast cancer receiving first-line chemotherapy compared to patients with breast cancer without chemotherapy.

Introduction: Subungual acantholytic dyskeratotic acanthoma is a rare benign tumor of epidermal keratinocytes characterized by acantholysis and dyskeratosis. Only 7 other cases have been published in the literature.

Case Presentation: A 29-year-old male presented with painful erythronychia and onycholysis of the left thumbnail.

Background: Severe cutaneous adverse reactions (SCAR) are a group of delayed presumed T-cell mediated hypersensitivities associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Despite their shared global healthcare burden and impact, the clinical phenotypes, genomic predisposition, drug causality, and treatment outcomes may vary. We describe the establishment and results from the first Australasian registry for SCAR (AUS-SCAR), that via a collaborative network advances strategies for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of SCAR.

Background: Bullous pemphigoid (BP) is the most common blistering autoimmune dermatosis and, as an age-associated disease, is also the bullous dermatosis with the highest increase in incidence in recent years due to demographic developments. Mucous membrane pemphigoid (MMP), which is less common, is a clinically and immunopathologically heterogeneous blistering autoimmune dermatosis characterized by blisters and erosions on mucous membranes.

Objective: This work summarizes the manifold clinical characteristics of both diseases and provides an up-to-date overview of diagnostics and therapy of BP and SHP.

Nail unit melanoma carries diagnostic challenges conferring with its poor prognosis. This audit aims to characterise both clinical and dermoscopic features of nail unit malignant lesions and compare them with biopsied benign lesions. It focuses on informing future practice by aiding in the stratification and recognition of malignant diagnostic patterns in the Australian context.

Background: Neutrophils have been shown to contribute to the pathophysiology of hidradenitis suppurativa (HS), a chronic, painful and debilitating inflammatory skin disease, yet their exact role remains to be fully defined. Granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF), a major regulator of neutrophil development and survival, can be blocked by the novel, fully human anti-G-CSF receptor (G-CSFR) monoclonal antibody CSL324.

Objectives: We investigated the activation and migration of neutrophils in HS and the impact of blocking G-CSFR with CSL324.

Article Synopsis
  • Epidermolysis bullosa (EB) is a rare genetic disorder causing fragile skin and painful blisters, leading to serious complications like chronic wounds and squamous cell carcinoma.
  • The EASE study was a phase III trial that tested Oleogel-S10, a topical gel with birch triterpenes, for improving wound healing in patients with different forms of EB.
  • Results showed that 41.3% of patients using Oleogel-S10 achieved complete wound closure within 45 days, compared to 28.9% with a control gel, indicating that Oleogel-S10 is effective and well-tolerated for treating wounds in EB patients.

Efficiently collecting light from single-photon emitters is crucial for photonic quantum technologies. Here, we develop and use an ultralow fluorescence photopolymer to three-dimensionally print micrometer-sized elliptical lenses on individual precharacterized single-photon emitters in hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) nanocrystals, operating in the visible regime. The elliptical lens design beams the light highly efficiently into the far field, rendering bulky objective lenses obsolete.

Article Synopsis
  • Severe cutaneous adverse reactions (SCAR) are serious conditions like Stevens-Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis, which can lead to significant health complications and high healthcare costs in Australia and New Zealand.
  • This multicenter study aims to investigate the clinical features, drug causes, genomic factors, and long-term impacts of SCAR by recruiting patients and analyzing their data through various tests.
  • The research has received ethical approval and will share findings in academic journals and conferences, contributing to better understanding and management of SCAR.

Onychopapilloma is an uncommon tumour of the nailbed and the distal nail matrix. To date, only 19 case reports and case series have been reported in the literature. This article includes literature review on all reported cases and provides the first case series of onychopapilloma in an Australian population, evaluating the clinical features and histopathological diagnosis of patients with onychopapilloma in an Australian subspecialty nail clinic.

BACKGROUNDPaclitaxel chemotherapy frequently induces dose-limiting sensory axonal polyneuropathy. Given that sensory symptoms are challenging to assess objectively in clinical practice, an easily accessible biomarker for chemotherapy-induced polyneuropathy (CIPN) holds the potential to improve early diagnosis. Here, we describe neurofilament light chain (NFL), a marker for neuroaxonal damage, as a translational surrogate marker for CIPN.

Transport of charge carriers is at the heart of current nanoelectronics. In conventional materials, electronic transport can be controlled by applying electric fields. Atomically thin semiconductors, however, are governed by excitons, which are neutral electron-hole pairs and as such cannot be controlled by electrical fields.

Recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa (RDEB) is a genetic skin blistering disease associated with progressive multiorgan fibrosis. RDEB is caused by biallelic mutations in COL7A1 encoding the extracellular matrix protein collagen VII (C7), which is necessary for epidermal‒dermal adherence. C7 is not simply a structural protein but also has multiple functions, including the regulation of TGFβ bioavailability and the inhibition of skin scarring.

Background: The success of clinical trials in Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB) is dependent upon the availability of a valid and reliable scoring tool that can accurately assess and monitor disease severity. The Epidermolysis Bullosa Disease Activity and Scarring Index (EBDASI) and Instrument for Scoring Clinical Outcomes of Research for Epidermolysis Bullosa (iscorEB) were independently developed and validated against the Birmingham Epidermolysis Bullosa Severity Score but have never been directly compared.

Objective: To compare the reliability, convergent validity, and discriminant validity of the EBDASI and iscorEB scoring tools.
