Article Synopsis
  • The University Hospital of Würzburg established a specialized Centre for Giant-cell Arteritis (ZeRi) to enhance collaboration in diagnosing and treating GCA.
  • A study evaluated diagnostic methods in 101 patients suspected of having GCA from 2017 to 2022, focusing on their effectiveness, including temporal artery biopsy.
  • Results showed that clinical symptoms, ESR, and CRP tests were crucial for detecting GCA, with sonography and MRI providing high predictive values, suggesting that biopsies may not be needed as frequently.

Article Synopsis
  • Belantamab mafodotin is an innovative drug approved for treating multiple myeloma patients who have not responded to other therapies, providing an alternative for those who can't use CAR-T or bispecific antibodies.
  • The drug's unique ocular side effects, like corneal microcysts and keratopathy, pose challenges for broader usage, and the study identifies a possible mechanism through which the drug affects the eyes via soluble BCMA (sBCMA) in tear fluid.
  • Results show that inhibiting the uptake of sBCMA could prevent keratopathy, suggesting that future treatment strategies might involve using different therapies before administering belantamab or combining it with gamma-secretase inhibitors in ongoing research.

Purpose: Fusarium keratitis is a severe infection of the anterior eye, frequently leading to keratoplasty or surgical removal of the affected eye. A major risk factor for infection is the use of contact lenses. Inadequate hygiene precautions and mold-growth permissive storage fluids are important risk factors for fungal keratitis.

Article Synopsis
  • The study evaluated long-term effects of corneal collagen crosslinking (CXL) on 131 patients with progressive keratoconus from 2006 to 2016, focusing on visual acuity and corneal measurements over time.
  • Results showed that while corrected visual acuity improved, the effectiveness of CXL diminished after 5 years, with an increase in non-responders, particularly among patients with certain risk factors like young age and high astigmatism.
  • The researchers concluded that CXL is effective in slowing keratoconus progression and suggested that patients displaying risk factors may need re-treatment after several years.

Background: Ocular involvement in mucous membrane pemphigoid (MMP) is relatively rare, with a prevalence of 25 cases per million population, equating to approx. 2,100 patients throughout Germany. Diagnosis can be difficult - especially in cases of isolated ocular involvement - and treatment can be complex and lengthy.

Fungal eye infections can lead to loss of vision and blindness. The disease is most prevalent in the tropics, although case numbers in moderate climates are increasing as well. This study aimed to determine the dominating filamentous fungi causing eye infections in Germany and their antifungal susceptibility profiles in order to improve treatment, including cases with unidentified pathogenic fungi.

We present a case of keratitis nine months after Descement's membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK) in a patient with Fuchs endothelial disease. Endothelial scraping revealed this rare yeast infection at the interface between graft and host cornea. Immediate antifungal treatment with intracameral and corneal intrastromal injections of voriconazole and amphotericin B remained unsuccessful, requiring penetrating keratoplasty.
