- A 4-year-old girl with the B1.1.7 variant of SARS-CoV-2 died from severe pneumonia and pulmonary hemorrhage after being referred to an ECMO center.
- Superinfection with Pseudomonas aeruginosa and evidence of herpes simplex sepsis were identified during her treatment.
- The autopsy revealed extensive lung damage consistent with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), and this is noted as the first documented case of a healthy child dying from this variant in Germany.
