Torsion of an abdominal organ often leads to an acute abdomen requiring emergency surgery. This report describes the rare case of an acute liver torsion in a 76-year-old man. Surgery revealed dislocation of the left liver lobe, which was flipped over to the right upper abdomen.

Article Synopsis
  • The study evaluates the effectiveness of using quantitative MRI analysis of tumor burden in predicting survival for patients with neuroendocrine tumor liver metastases undergoing specific intra-arterial therapies.
  • A total of 122 patients were analyzed, with measurements taken from their largest liver lesions and categorized into low and high tumor burden groups.
  • Results showed that lower tumor burdens significantly correlated with longer median overall survival, indicating that these measurements are critical prognostic factors for patient outcomes.

Significant treatment variation exists in the Netherlands between teams treating patients with cleft lip, alveolus, and/or palate, resulting in a confusing and undesirable situation for patients, parents, and practitioners. Therefore, to optimize cleft care, clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) were developed. The aim of this report is to describe CPG development, share the main recommendations, and indicate knowledge gaps regarding cleft care.

Background/aim: Lipiodol is the key component of conventional trans-arterial chemoembolization. Our aim was to evaluate lipiodol deposition and washout rate after conventional trans-arterial chemoembolization in intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma and hepatic metastases originating from neuroendocrine tumors and colorectal carcinoma.

Patients And Methods: This was a retrospective analysis of 44 patients with intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma and liver metastasis from neuroendocrine tumors or colorectal carcinoma who underwent conventional trans-arterial chemoembolization.

This study was designed to assess 3D vs. 1D and 2D quantitative tumor analysis for prediction of overall survival (OS) in patients with Intrahepatic Cholangiocarcinoma (ICC) who underwent conventional transarterial chemoembolization (cTACE). 73 ICC patients who underwent cTACE were included in this retrospective analysis between Oct 2001 and Feb 2015.

Background: Many factors of trauma care have changed in the last decades. This review investigated the effect of these changes on global all-cause and cause-specific mortality in polytrauma patients admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU). Moreover, changes in trauma mechanism over time and differences between continents were analyzed.

Purpose: To investigate toxicity, efficacy, and microenvironmental effects of idarubicin-loaded 40-μm and 100-μm drug-eluting embolic (DEE) transarterial chemoembolization in a rabbit liver tumor model.

Materials And Methods: Twelve male New Zealand White rabbits with orthotopically implanted VX2 liver tumors were assigned to DEE chemoembolization with 40-μm (n = 5) or 100-μm (n = 4) ONCOZENE microspheres or no treatment (control; n = 3). At 24-72 hours postprocedurally, multiparametric magnetic resonance (MR) imaging including dynamic contrast-enhanced (DCE), diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI), and biosensor imaging of redundant deviation in shifts (BIRDS) was performed to assess extracellular pH (pHe), followed by immediate euthanasia.

Unlabelled: The goal of this study was to investigate the role of Lipiodol as a tumor-specific imaging biomarker to determine therapeutic efficacy of cTACE and investigate its inter-dependency with tumor perfusion using radiological-pathological correlation in an animal model of liver cancer.

Methods: A total of N=36 rabbits were implanted in the left lobe of the liver with VX2 tumors, treated with cTACE using doxorubicin suspended in Lipiodol, and randomly sacrificed at 24 h, 7 days, or 20 days post-TACE. Unenhanced and contrast-enhanced CT scans including a perfusion protocol were obtained before cTACE and immediately before sacrifice.

Intra-arterial therapies (IATs) play an integral role in the management of unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma and liver metastases. The ability to accurately assess tumor response to intra-arterial therapies is crucial for clinical management. Several one- and two-dimensional manual imaging-based response assessment techniques, based both on tumor size or enhancement, have shown to be highly subjective and merely surrogate for the actual tumor as a whole.

Background: Previous studies demonstrated both pre-clinically and clinically the feasibility of magnetic resonance-guided high-intensity focused ultrasound (MR-HIFU) ablations in the liver. To overcome the associated problem of respiratory motion of the ablation area, general anesthesia (GA) and mechanical ventilation was used in conjunction with either respiratory-gated energy delivery or energy delivery during induced apnea. However, clinical procedures requiring GA are generally associated with increased mortality, morbidity, and complication rate compared to procedural sedation and analgesia (PSA).

Introduction: Therapy of choice for symptomatic vascular malformations consists of surgery, sclerotherapy, or embolization. However, these techniques are invasive with possible complications and require hospitalization. We present a novel non-invasive technique, i.

Objective: To prospectively assess the safety and technical feasibility of volumetric magnetic resonance-guided high-intensity focused ultrasound (MR-HIFU) ablation with direct skin cooling (DISC) during treatment of uterine fibroids.

Methods: In this proof-of-concept study, eight patients were consecutively selected for clinical MR-HIFU ablation of uterine fibroids with the use of an additional DISC device to maintain a constant temperature (T ≈ 20 °C) at the interface between the HIFU table top and the skin. Technical feasibility was verified by successful completion of MR-HIFU ablation.
