Automated Reminders Improve Retinal Screening Rates in Low Income, Minority Patients with Diabetes and Correct the African American Disparity.

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a major cause of blindness in the United States. Prevention relies on periodic DR screening, yet overall national screening rates are not optimal, especially in low-income, minority patients. We prospectively evaluated show rates for prescheduled teleretinal DR screening appointments in diabetic patients (n = 301) in a large safety-net clinic in South Central Los Angeles.
