Background: Children and adolescents with Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) are susceptible to developing venous thromboembolism (VTE) due to several predisposing factors such as cancer itself, central venous catheter use, mediastinal mass, and glucocorticoid therapy, yet reports on the topic are scarce.

Aim: To study incidence, risk factors, and treatment of VTE, and the use of thromboprophylaxis, in a retrospective clinical study on pediatric HL.

Methods: Children under 18, diagnosed with HL 2005-2019 in Sweden, Denmark, and Finland were included.

Background: Osteonecrosis (ON) is a potentially disabling skeletal complication of cancer treatment. Although symptomatic osteonecrosis (sON) is well-known in acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), with an incidence around 6%, studies on sON in pediatric Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) are scarce. The aim of this study was to examine the incidence, risk factors, and outcome of sON in children treated for HL.

Osteonecrosis (ON) is a common complication of glucocorticoid-based Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) treatment, but the natural evolution and prognosis of ON lesions remain poorly understood. We describe the radiological evolution of ON lesions identified in a Nordic population-based cohort of paediatric HL patients. Magnetic resonance images of suspected ON lesions were centrally reviewed to confirm ON diagnosis and grade the ON lesions according to the Niinimäki classification.

Background: Evidence is low regarding the choice of calcineurin inhibitor for immunosuppression after lung transplantation. We aimed to compare the use of tacrolimus once per day with ciclosporin twice per day according to the current definition of chronic lung allograft dysfunction (CLAD) after lung transplantation.

Methods: ScanCLAD is an investigator-initiated, open-label, multicentre, randomised, controlled trial in Scandinavia evaluating whether an immunosuppressive protocol based on anti-thymocyte globulin induction followed by tacrolimus (once per day), mycophenolate mofetil, and corticosteroids reduces the incidence of CLAD after de novo lung transplantation compared with a protocol using ciclosporin (twice per day), mycophenolate mofetil, and corticosteroids.

Aim: Risk of treatment-related life-threatening toxicity is high in childhood acute myeloid leukaemia (AML), and access to intensive care units (ICU) is crucial. We explored the ICU admission rate and outcome after intensive care in childhood AML in Sweden.

Methods: Patients diagnosed between 2008 and 2016 were identified from the Swedish Childhood Cancer Registry (SCCR), a national quality registry.

Objectives: Despite progress in the treatment of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia, severe complications are common, and the need of supportive care is high. We explored the cumulative prevalence, clinical risk factors, and outcomes of children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, on first-line leukemia treatment in the ICUs in Sweden.

Design: A nationwide prospective register and retrospective chart review study.

Background: Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is used in severe respiratory and/or circulatory failure when conventional critical care fails. Studies on patients with hematologic malignancies on ECMO have shown contradictory results; immunosuppression and coagulopathy are relative contraindications to ECMO.

Observations: This nationwide Swedish retrospective chart review identified 958 children with hematologic malignancies of whom 12 (1.

Background: A low level of evidence exists regarding the choice of calcineurin inhibitor (CNI) for immunosuppression after lung transplantation (LTx). Therefore, we designed a randomized clinical trial according to good clinical practice rules to compare tacrolimus with cyclosporine after LTx.

Methods: The ScanCLAD study is an investigator-initiated, pragmatic, controlled, randomized, open-label, multicenter study evaluating if an immunosuppressive protocol based on anti-thymocyte globulin (ATG) induction, once-daily tacrolimus dose, mycophenolate mofetil, and corticosteroid reduces the incidence of chronic lung allograft dysfunction (CLAD) after LTx, compared to a cyclosporine-based protocol with all other immunosuppressive and prophylactic drugs being identical between groups.

Background: Thiopurines are considered first-line immunomodulators for the prevention of relapse in moderate to severe pediatric Crohn's disease (CD). Early introduction of thiopurines was shown in a pediatric trial to maintain steroid-free remission in 90% of patients for 18 months. In the present study we analyzed the tolerance and efficacy of azathioprine (AZA) to maintain remission in a homogenous single-center observational cohort of children with CD.

Aims And Objectives: To describe possible social, nutritional and biological factors influencing iron intake and iron status among healthy one-year-old children in southern Sweden.

Background: Iron deficiency is one of the most important nutritional disorders and increases the risk of delayed mental and motor development. Children are at risk because of rapid growth, which entails relatively high requirements of iron.

Defensins, endogenous antibiotic peptides, are part of the intestinal epithelial barrier. In this pilot study we analyzed the possibility of measuring fecal beta-defensin-2 (HBD2) in comparing inflammatory and noninflammatory conditions. In samples from healthy control individuals, low levels of HBD2 were detectable, which markedly rose under inflammatory conditions (P = 0.
