Assessing screening instruments and thresholds to detect risk of depression in diabetes patients, a brief report.

Over the last decades several self-report instruments have been developed to identify diabetes at risk for depression. In a sample of diabetes outpatients, we assessed the accuracy of three widely-used instruments, and recommend the instruments with the best sensitivity and specificity for identifying diabetes in need of early treatment for depression.

Cancer mortality patterns among Turkish immigrants in four European countries and in Turkey.

The aim of this study on cancer mortality among Turkish immigrants, for the first time, traditional comparisons in migrant health research have been extended simultaneously in two ways. First, comparisons were made to cancer mortality from the immigrants' country of origin and second, cancer mortality among Turkish immigrants across four host countries (Belgium, Denmark, France and the Netherlands) was compared. Population-based cancer mortality data from these countries were included.

Dances of Death: macabre mirrors of an unequal society.

Objectives: Between 1400 and 1800, Dances of Death were a popular art form depicting a metaphorical encounter between Death and representatives of a stratified human society. We review the thematic development of Dances of Death and study the development of social critique.

Methods: We first assembled a full catalogue of all Dances of Death created between 1400 and 1800.

Sharp upturn of life expectancy in the Netherlands: effect of more health care for the elderly?

During the 1980s and 1990s life expectancy at birth has risen only slowly in the Netherlands. In 2002, however, the rise in life expectancy suddenly accelerated. We studied the possible causes of this remarkable development.
