Purpose: The proposed advantages of NOTES are aimed to assess the comparison with standard procedures. Complications are a major focus of its evaluation. We initiated a prospective comparison between transvaginal hybrid appendectomy versus laparoscopic appendectomy.

In the current study, a pure natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery (NOTES) technique was developed for sigmoid resection, with combined transgastric and transvaginal access to the abdominal cavity and assisted by colonoscopy.
Methods: This experimental study was conducted on a porcine model.
Background: Natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery (NOTES) refers to a new surgical procedure using flexible endoscopes in the abdominal cavity. With this procedure, access is gained by way of organs which are reached through a natural, already-existing external orifice. The hoped-for advantages associated with this method include the reduction of post-operative wound pain, shorter convalescence, avoidance of wound infection and abdominal-wall hernias as well as the absence of scars.

The resulting model of a Candida oesophagitis was approaching the in vivo situation. We infected the tissue with 2 x 10(6) cfu of the Candida albicans strain SC5314.
