Caesarean delivery is the most performed inpatient surgery worldwide, with rates expected to rise. Optimising maternal recovery benefits not only the mother, but also the newborn and society. Enhanced Recovery After Caesarean delivery (ERAC) protocols standardize the approach to perioperative management of patients in order to accelerate early postoperative maternal rehabilitation.

Advancing pharmacometrics in Africa-Transition from capacity development toward job creation.

Trained pharmacometricians remain scarce in Africa due to limited training opportunities, lack of a pharmaceutical product development ecosystem, and emigration to high-income countries. The Applied Pharmacometrics Training (APT) fellowship program was established to address these gaps and specifically foster job creation for talent retention. We review the APT program's progress over 3 years and encourage collaboration to enhance local clinical data analysis in Africa.

Mucinous carcinoma of the skin is a rare, low-grade malignancy often clinically misdiagnosed as a benign lesion. This tumour mostly grows locally and has minimal potential for lymphatic or distant metastasis. Commonly affected sites include the periorbital region, particularly the eyelid, and the scalp.

Evaluating the effectiveness of patient-tailored treatment for patients with non-specific (sub)acute neck pain.

Background: An important issue in the debate about best practice management of non-specific neck pain (NSNP) is the effectiveness of tailored versus generalized interventions.

Methods: Participants with (sub)acute NSNP were randomly allocated to a patient-tailored treatment (PTT), non-patient-tailored treatment (NPTT) or control group (no intervention). The outcome measures were pain (NPRS), disability (NDI), global perceived effect and satisfaction (GPES), productivity costs, and medical consumption.

Three-dimensional tissue engineered skeletal muscle modelling facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy.

Facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD) is caused by sporadic misexpression of the transcription factor double homeobox 4 (DUX4) in skeletal muscles. So far, monolayer cultures and animal models have been used to study the FSHD disease mechanism and for FSHD therapy development, but these models do not fully recapitulate the disease and there is a lack of knowledge on how DUX4 misexpression leads to skeletal muscle dysfunction. To overcome these barriers, we have developed a three-dimensional tissue engineered skeletal muscle (3D-TESM) model by generating genetically matched myogenic progenitors (MPs) from human induced pluripotent stem cells of three mosaic FSHD patients.

Objective: This article describes a clinical protocol utilizing soft tissue augmentation alone or in combination with guided bone regeneration (GBR), introducing simultaneous application of the one abutment one time concept for three-dimensional reconstruction of the deficient ridge.

Clinical Considerations: Soft and hard tissue quality and dimensions are fundamental elements for long lasting results in implant dentistry. Different techniques have been described for soft and hard tissue augmentation at time of implant placement presenting favorable results.

The influence of expectations and attention on conditioned pain modulation: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Conditioned pain modulation (CPM) is a psychophysical experimental measure of endogenous pain inhibition in humans. Within this paradigm, one noxious stimulus, the conditioning stimulus (CS), reduces the pain perception from another heterotopic noxious stimulus, the test stimulus (TS). Cognitive processes are known to influence pain perception and might impact the underlying mechanisms of CPM.

Familial Subcutaneous Granuloma Annulare: A Case Report of Two Siblings.

Granuloma annulare (GA) is a rare inflammatory granulomatous disorder and its subcutaneous forms are even more uncommon. Only a few familial cases of this condition have been reported in the literature. We report a case of familial subcutaneous GA in two siblings during childhood.

Ruminal Crude Protein Degradation Determined in Sacco and by Co-Incubation of Protease and Carbohydrases.

The objectives of the study were to examine the effect of an antibiotic solution applied in the protease method (SGPM) and the effect of carbohydrases in SGPM on the effective crude protein (CP) degradation (ED) with reference to in sacco ED. For this purpose, the ruminal CP degradation of rapeseed meal, dried distillers' grains with solubles, wheat grain, corn grain, corn silage, grass silage and partial crop field pea silage was determined in sacco using three rumen-fistulated dairy cows and in vitro using SGPM. The impact of the antibiotic solution on CP degradation by protease was investigated by supplementing SGPM with Penicillin-Streptomycin solution to reduce microbial mass proliferation during incubation.

Assessing genetic structure and diversity in wildlife is particularly important in the context of climate change. The Arctic is rapidly warming, and endemic species must adapt quickly or face significant threats to persistence. Bowhead whales (Balaena mysticetus) and narwhals (Monodon monoceros) are two long-lived Arctic species with similar habitat requirements and are often seen together in the Canadian Arctic.

Case report: Personalized triple phage-antibiotic combination therapy to rescue necrotizing fasciitis caused by Panton-Valentine leukocidin-producing MRSA in a 12-year-old boy.

Maximal standard-of-care (SOC) management could not stop the life-threatening progression of a necrotizing fasciitis induced by Panton-Valentine Leukocidin-producing Methicillin-Resistant (MRSA) in a 12-year-old boy. Multi-route phage therapy was initiated along with antibiotics against and , eventually leading to full recovery with no reported adverse events.

Impact of [F] FDG PET/CT on outcomes in patients with Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia: A retrospective single-center experience.

Objective: Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia (SAB) is a leading cause of community and hospital-acquired bacteremia with significant morbidity and mortality. Effective management depends on accurate diagnosis, source control and assessment of metastatic infections. [F] FDG PET/CT has been shown to reduce mortality in high-risk SAB patients.

Infantile Bullous Pemphigoid: Vaccination and SARS-CoV-2 Infection as Triggers.

Bullous pemphigoid (BP) is an acquired auto-immune blistering disease, which is uncommon during childhood. Infantile BP usually has a good prognosis with rare recurrence and the suspected triggers are vaccines or viruses. We report the case of a three-month-old infant girl who presented with BP a week after a SARS-CoV-2 infection and three weeks after the first doses of polio, tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis, Haemophilus influenzae type-b, hepatitis, and pneumococcus vaccinations.

Deep Plasma Proteomics with Data-Independent Acquisition: Clinical Study Protocol Optimization with a COVID-19 Cohort.

Plasma proteomics is a precious tool in human disease research but requires extensive sample preparation in order to perform in-depth analysis and biomarker discovery using traditional data-dependent acquisition (DDA). Here, we highlight the efficacy of combining moderate plasma prefractionation and data-independent acquisition (DIA) to significantly improve proteome coverage and depth while remaining cost-efficient. Using human plasma collected from a 20-patient COVID-19 cohort, our method utilizes commonly available solutions for depletion, sample preparation, and fractionation, followed by 3 liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry/MS (LC-MS/MS) injections for a 360 min total DIA run time.

Assessing the risk of climate maladaptation for Canadian polar bears.

The Arctic is warming four times faster than the rest of the world, threatening the persistence of many Arctic species. It is uncertain if Arctic wildlife will have sufficient time to adapt to such rapidly warming environments. We used genetic forecasting to measure the risk of maladaptation to warming temperatures and sea ice loss in polar bears (Ursus maritimus) sampled across the Canadian Arctic.

Carbohydrate digestion in the stomach of horses grazed on pasture, fed hay or hay and oats.

Concentrations of starch, mono- and disaccharides, fructans, hemicellulose and cellulose were analysed in feed and gastric digesta of horses in relation to acid insoluble ash as a marker indigestible in the stomach. Twenty-four horses were allocated to pasture 24 h/d (PST; n = 4), hay ad libitum (HAY; n = 8), hay ad lib. and oats at 1 g starch/kg body weight (BWT)/meal (OS1; n = 6) and hay ad lib.
