Development of an Internet of Things Technology Platform (the NEX System) to Support Older Adults to Live Independently: Protocol for a Development and Usability Study.

Background: In a rapidly aging population, new and efficient ways of providing health and social support to older adults are required that not only preserve independence but also maintain quality of life and safety.

Objective: The NEX project aims to develop an integrated Internet of Things system coupled with artificial intelligence to offer unobtrusive health and wellness monitoring to support older adults living independently in their home environment. The primary objective of this study is to develop and evaluate the technical performance and user acceptability of the NEX system.

Understanding basic vein physiology and venous blood pressure through simple physical assessments.

An understanding of the complexity of the cardiovascular system is incomplete without a knowledge of the venous system. It is important for students to understand that, in a closed system, like the circulatory system, changes to the venous side of the circulation have a knock-on effect on heart function and the arterial system and vice versa. Veins are capacitance vessels feeding blood to the right side of the heart.

Ultrasound imaging in teaching cardiac physiology.

This laboratory session provides hands-on experience for students to visualize the beating human heart with ultrasound imaging. Simple views are obtained from which students can directly measure important cardiac dimensions in systole and diastole. This allows students to derive, from first principles, important measures of cardiac function, such as stroke volume, ejection fraction, and cardiac output.

Autonomic modification of intestinal smooth muscle contractility.

Intestinal smooth muscle contracts rhythmically in the absence of nerve and hormonal stimulation because of the activity of pacemaker cells between and within the muscle layers. This means that the autonomic nervous system modifies rather than initiates intestinal contractions. The practical described here gives students an opportunity to observe this spontaneous activity and its modification by agents associated with parasympathetic and sympathetic nerve activity.

Safety and efficacy of ulimorelin administered postoperatively to accelerate recovery of gastrointestinal motility following partial bowel resection: results of two randomized, placebo-controlled phase 3 trials.

Background: Gastrointestinal recovery is a critical milestone after bowel resection with postoperative ileus resulting in increased risk of complications and prolonged hospitalization.

Objective: The aim of this study is to evaluate the efficacy and safety of ulimorelin, a ghrelin receptor agonist given postoperatively in 2 identically designed phase 3 studies (ClinicalTrials.gov NCT01285570 and NCT01296620).

BACE1 mRNA expression in Alzheimer's disease postmortem brain tissue.

β-site AβPP cleaving enzyme 1 (BACE1) catalyses the rate-limiting step for production of amyloid-β (Aβ) peptides, involved in the pathological cascade underlying Alzheimer's disease (AD). Elevated BACE1 protein levels and activity have been reported in AD postmortem brains. Our study explored whether this was due to elevated BACE1 mRNA expression.

Growth rate retardation and inhibitory effect of para-JEM(R) BLUE on Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis.

The effect of para-JEM(R) BLUE on Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis (MAP) inoculated into broth-based culture media was evaluated by using 84 fecal samples with known MAP status. Results showed that growth of the organism in samples inoculated into the broth without the para-JEM BLUE was detectable 1-35 days (average of 6 days) earlier in 35 of the samples (42%) compared with the same samples inoculated in broth with para-JEM BLUE. Four additional samples (5%) that were MAP positive in the culture broth that lacked the para-JEM BLUE gave negative results when the reagent was included.

Tenofovir disoproxil fumarate versus adefovir dipivoxil for chronic hepatitis B.
