Opportunities to Improve Communication With Residency Applicants: Cross-Sectional Study of Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Program Websites.

Background: As part of the residency application process in the United States, many medical specialties now offer applicants the opportunity to send program signals that indicate high interest to a limited number of residency programs. To determine which residency programs to apply to, and which programs to send signals to, applicants need accurate information to determine which programs align with their future training goals. Most applicants use a program's website to review program characteristics and criteria, so describing the current state of residency program websites can inform programs of best practices.

Women's Health Outpatient Care Teams: Focus on Advanced Practice Providers.

Team-based care in the outpatient women's health setting has the potential to help alleviate the demand for women's health care providers and to deliver improved quality of care to the growing population of US women. Although teamwork is necessary in the current health care system, most of the current obstetrics and gynecology and advanced practice provider (APP) workforce were not trained for collaborative practice. Core competencies for building an effective outpatient women's health care team are explained and current evidence regarding the specific role of APPs in women's health care is reviewed.

Is There a Shortage of Obstetrician-Gynecologists?

Projections of supply and demand for obstetricians-gynecologists suggest a current minimal or modest shortage that will worsen in the future. The US adult female population is expected to increase by more than 20% by 2045 and represents a key driver for increased demand for health care services. The annual number of obstetrician-gynecologists (ob-gyn) residency graduates has increased negligibly, whereas the proportion accepted into fellowships increased steadily, reducing those in general practice.

Prehospital Breech Delivery with Fetal Head Entrapment -A Case Report and Review.

We present a case in which an emergency medical services (EMS) crew was called for a precipitous breech delivery with fetal head entrapment that was unrelieved following standard prehospital interventions and eventually resulted in neonatal cardiac arrest and death. Although this is a rare occurrence, EMS responders must have adequate training and guidelines on how to assist with vaginal delivery of breech presentation and how to appropriately manage fetal head entrapment in the field. There is little literature to provide guidance but it appears that standard EMS teaching does not represent current best obstetrical practice.

Cervical cancer screening in pregnancy.

Cervical cancer is the most commonly diagnosed malignancy during pregnancy with an incidence of 1.5 to 12 per 100,000 pregnancies. In the United States between 2% and 7% of all pregnant women will have an abnormal Pap test.

Barriers to intrauterine device insertion in postpartum women.

Objective: The objective of this study was to determine the proportion of postpartum women at the University of New Mexico who choose an IUD for contraception, the number who actually obtain one and the barriers to postpartum IUD insertion.

Method: We conducted a retrospective chart review of 1627 postpartum women who delivered at the University of New Mexico. Those women who indicated at hospital discharge that they desired an IUD comprised the study group of 193 women.
