Preoperative prognostic factors in patients with ductal adenocarcinoma of the head of the pancreas.

Feasibility of biogas and energy generation from poultry manure in Brazil.

The aim of the present study is to experimentally measure the volume and composition of biogas produced from the anaerobic biodigestion of laying-hen manure from poultry farms in Itanhandu-MG, Brazil, so that the biogas can be used to generate energy. Two experiments (E1 and E2) were used to characterise the biogas quantities and compositions at room temperature and at a controlled temperature of 36 °C, respectively. The biogas production and calculated net power from the exploitation of biogas energy were compared with the results obtained from methods proposed by the Environmental Company of the State of São Paulo (CETESB, an acronym in Portuguese) using the 'Biogas: Generation and energy use - effluent and rural waste' software 1.

[Assessment of functional capacity in patients with rheumatoid arthritis: implications for recommending exercise].

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disease characterized by chronic symmetric polyarthritis of large and small joints and by morning stiffness that may lead to musculoskeletal impairment, with functional impotence. The concept of functionality relates to the ability of an individual to perform effectively and independently daily activities and tasks of everyday life. The aim of this review is to familiarize the rheumatologist with the concept of functional capacity evaluation and with the tests that can be applied in this population, as these are important steps for a proper exercise prescription.

[Nurse's effective participation in planning: focus on costs].

This research searched to verify if the nurses of a private hospital in São Paulo-SP, Brazil, have costs management view and to observe how occur their participation in the planning levels, specifically in relation to the costs. Forty nurses were interviewed during their journey through a questionnaire about caring costs management and the levels of organizational planning. It was observed that 85% of the nurses interviewed affirmed that they don't participate on the caring costs management, and that 45% of the participants didn't know to explain the importance of this knowledge.

Microcarcinoids associated with diversion colitis in a patient with Crohn's disease.

Diversion colitis is an iatrogenic disorder related to surgical diversion of the faecal stream from the colorectal mucosa, first described by Morson in 1972. Inflammation of the defunctioned mucosa seems to be related to deprivation of luminal nutrients, in particular short chain fatty acids. Histologic abnormalities include damage of the epithelium and reparative changes with crypt distortion and branching, a mixed acute and chronic inflammatory infiltrate with crypt abscesses and lymphoid hyperplasia, Paneth cell metaplasia and thickening of the muscularis mucosae.

A reassessment of the in vitro RBC haemolysis assay with defibrinated sheep blood for the determination of the ocular irritation potential of cosmetic products: comparison with the in vivo Draize rabbit test.

We examined the correlation between results obtained from the in vivo Draize test for ocular irritation and in vitro results obtained from the sheep red blood cell (RBC) haemolytic assay, which assesses haemolysis and protein denaturation in erythrocytes, induced by cosmetic products. We sought to validate the haemolytic assay as a preliminary test for identifying highly-irritative products, and also to evaluate the in vitro test as alternative assay for replacement of the in vivo test. In vitro and in vivo analyses were carried out on 19 cosmetic products, in order to correlate the lesions in the ocular structures with three in vitro parameters: (i) the extent of haemolysis (H50); (ii) the protein denaturation index (DI); and (iii) the H50/DI ratio, which reflects the irritation potential (IP).

[The knowledge of medical students about cornea donation].

Purpose: To compare knowledge of medical students about the cornea donation process among those who already studied Ophthalmology and the others. METHODOS: A questionnaire containing data as: age, sex, graduation year, and 10 multiple-choice questions about the subject was applied to medical students from the interior of São Paulo state, Brazil. The questions were: age for donation, contraindication for transplants, the time limit to remove the cornea, among others.

Ocular problems in Brazilian patients with AIDS before and in highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) era.

This study determined the total frequency of patients with AIDS and ophthalmologic problems before and after the introduction of combined highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART), regardless of the use of this treatment; it also determined the frequency of external ocular diseases, intraocular infections and inflammations, and problems of the anterior portion of the optic nerve in these two groups of patients; and it determined the differences in the frequency of ophthalmologic problems in patients receiving HAART or not. This was a retrospective study of 207 patients examined using the same protocol, from June 1995 to February 1998 (n=58, pre-HAART era) and from March 1998 to May 2005 (n=149, HAART era). The frequency of ophthalmologic problems was significantly higher in the pre-HAART group, with a predominance of intraocular infections and inflammations.
