Objectives: The purpose of this study was to measure the association between the level of physical activity and sedentary conditions with anthropometric measurements of children and adolescents.

Methods: This cross-sectional descriptive study consisted of a convenience sample of 400 children and adolescents from public schools in Itapevi-SP, Brazil. The Physical Activity Checklist Interview or LAF "Lista de Atividades Físicas" in a Brazilian version, was administered in a face-to-face interview on a school day and allowed assessment of sedentary behavior and physical activity on the previous day.

Hot electrons and holes generated from the decay of localised surface plasmons in metallic nanoparticles can be harnessed for applications in solar energy conversion and sensing. In this paper, we study the generation of hot carriers in large spherical gold-silver alloy nanoparticles using a recently developed atomistic modelling approach that combines a solution of Maxwell's equations with large-scale tight-binding simulations. We find that hot-carrier properties depend sensitively on the alloy composition.

While the role of crystal facets is well known in traditional heterogeneous catalysis, this effect has not yet been thoroughly studied in plasmon-assisted catalysis, where attention has primarily focused on plasmon-derived mechanisms. Here, we investigate plasmon-assisted electrocatalytic CO reduction using different shapes of plasmonic Au nanoparticles - nanocube (NC), rhombic dodecahedron (RD), and octahedron (OC) - exposing {100}, {110}, and {111} facets, respectively. Upon plasmon excitation, Au OCs doubled CO Faradaic efficiency (FE) and tripled CO partial current density (j) compared to a dark condition, with NCs also improving under illumination.

Recently, there has been significant interest in harnessing hot-carriers generated from the decay of localized surface plasmons in metallic nanoparticles for applications in photocatalysis, photovoltaics, and sensing. In this work, we develop an atomistic method that makes it possible to predict the population of hot-carriers under continuous wave illumination for large nanoparticles of relevance to experimental studies. For this, we solve the equation of motion of the density matrix, taking into account both the excitation of hot-carriers and subsequent relaxation effects.

We present the first theoretical study of transport properties of Weyl semimetals with point defects. Focusing on a class of time-reversal symmetric Weyl lattice models, we show that dilute lattice vacancies induce a finite density of quasilocalized states at and near the nodal energy, causing strong modifications to the low-energy spectrum. This generates novel transport effects, namely, (i) an oscillatory behavior of the dc conductivity with the charge carrier density in the absence of magnetic fields, and (ii) a plateau-shaped dissipative optical response for photon frequencies below the interband threshold, E_{F}≲ℏω≲2E_{F}.

Oceans hold a stunning number of unique microorganisms, which remain unstudied by culture-dependent methods due to failures in establishing the right conditions for these organisms to grow. In this work, an isolation effort inspired by the iChip was performed using marine sediments from Memoria beach, Portugal. The isolates obtained were identified by 16S rRNA gene analysis, fingerprinted using BOX-PCR and ERIC-PCR, searched for the putative presence of secondary metabolism genes associated with polyketide synthase I (PKS-I) and non-ribosomal peptide synthetases (NRPS), screened for antimicrobial activity against ATCC 25922 and ATCC 29213, and had bioactive extracts dereplicated by LC/HRMS.

We present KITE, a general purpose open-source tight-binding software for accurate real-space simulations of electronic structure and quantum transport properties of large-scale molecular and condensed systems with tens of billions of atomic orbitals ( ∼ 10). KITE's core is written in C++, with a versatile Python-based interface, and is fully optimized for shared memory multi-node CPU architectures, thus scalable, efficient and fast. At the core of KITE is a seamless spectral expansion of lattice Green's functions, which enables large-scale calculations of generic target functions with uniform convergence and fine control over energy resolution.

In this paper, we developed a basis-independent perturbative method for calculating the non-linear optical response of arbitrary non-interacting tight-binding models. Our method is based on the non-equilibrium Keldysh formalism and allows an efficient numerical implementation within the framework of the kernel polynomial method for systems which are not required to be translation-invariant. Some proof-of-concept results of the second-order optical conductivity are presented for the special case of gapped graphene with vacancies and an on-site Anderson disordered potential.
