The energy transfer in the aquatic food chain is an important way for mercury (Hg) to enter other trophic levels. The objective of this work was to evaluate the Hg concentrations in plankton upstream and downstream of the Samuel Hydroelectric Reservoir, Rondônia, Brazil. Phytoplankton and zooplankton samples were collected with 20-μm and 68-μm nylon nets.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates mercury levels in various environmental (like river sediments and fish) and human samples from the lower Madeira River, focusing on data collected 15-20 years after a decline in gold mining activities.
  • Despite a drop in mercury emissions due to falling gold prices, the results indicate that mercury concentrations in fish and humans have not significantly changed compared to levels during the mining boom.
  • The persistence of high mercury concentrations is attributed to the remobilization from sediments and soil changes, rather than ongoing mining activities.
