Background: The specific risk factors for surgical site infection (SSI) in orthopaedic oncology patients undergoing endoprosthetic reconstruction have not previously been evaluated in a large prospective cohort. In the current study, we aimed to define patient- and procedure-specific risk factors for SSI in patients who underwent surgical excision and endoprosthetic reconstruction for lower-extremity bone or soft-tissue tumors using the prospectively collected data of the Prophylactic Antibiotic Regimens in Tumor Surgery (PARITY) trial.

Methods: PARITY was a multicenter, blinded, randomized controlled trial with a parallel 2-arm design that aimed to determine the effect of a long duration (5 days) versus short duration (24 hours) of postoperative prophylactic antibiotics on the rate of SSI in patients undergoing surgical excision and endoprosthetic reconstruction of the femur or tibia.

Objective: Present the preliminary results of a case series using the surgical ankle arthrodesis technique with an intramedullary retrograde nail for bone tumors.

Methods: We present the preliminary data of 4 patients, 3 males and 1 female, with a mean age of 46,2 (range 32 to 58) years, with histology proven Giant Cell Tumour of bone in 3 and osteosarcoma in 1. The mean resection length of distal tibia was 11,75 (range 9 to 16) cm, and all the patients underwent reconstruction with a tibiotalocalcaneal arthrodesis with an intercalary allograft fixed by a retrograde intramedullary nail.

Excessive solar exposure presents well-recognized risks and side effects, solar radiation being the most important environmental factor concerning skin cancer. In the last few years, several connections between solar exposure and prevention and/or treatment of several diseases have been discussed, with studies suggesting that regular solar exposure may be beneficial for conditions such as colorectal, breast, prostate, and pancreatic cancer; non-Hodgkin lymphoma; arterial hypertension; obesity; type 2 diabetes mellitus and metabolic syndrome; nonalcoholic hepatic steatosis; multiple sclerosis; Alzheimer disease; and several psychiatric disturbances. In most cases, UV radiation's beneficial effects are mediated through vitamin D; however, studies show that in other instances other mediators are responsible for these associations, specifically nitric oxide.

This work investigates the immobilization of the antibiotic gentamicin sulfate (GS) in electrospun fiber mats composed of poly(lactic acid) (PLA), poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) and the copolymer poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA). Since GS is highly water soluble but weakly soluble in the organic solvents commonly used in the electrospinning process, two methods of immobilization were investigated: by suspension electrospinning, in which GS particles were directly dispersed in the polymeric organic solutions, and by emulsion electrospinning, in which GS was solubilized in an aqueous phase that was then dispersed in the organic polymeric solution containing the surfactant SPAN80. Fibers with distinct diameters and morphologies were obtained for the different methods and compositions.

Schnitzler syndrome is a rare acquired systemic disease with a chronic evolution and difficult treatment. We report a 50-year-old woman with Schnitzler syndrome for 10 years, with major impact on her quality of life and refractory to conventional therapies. The patient was started on anakinra, an IL-1 receptor antagonist, with a rapid and sustained remission of the syndrome manifestations.

We report a case of a 63-year-old man who presented an end stage hip osteoarthritis 42 years after a proximal femoral osteotomy performed for the treatment of an intracapsular femoral neck fracture. A cemented total hip arthroplasty was implanted using a standard posterior approach. The osteotomy hardware was totally covered with a new cortical bone formation.

Behçet's disease is a relapsing multisystem polysymptomatic disease with exacerbations and remissions defined by the presence of the major symptom, recurrent oral aphthous ulcers, plus two of the following: recurrent genital ulceration, eye lesions, skin lesions or a positive pathergy test. Mucocutaneous manifestations like oral and genital ulcers, and cutaneous lesions (papulopustular lesions, erythema nodosum-like lesions, cutaneous ulcers, superficial thrombophlebitis), are considered the \"fingerprint\" of the disease, being the most common and often the first signs to appear. Although the exact etiopathogenesis is still not known, genetic predispose and environmental factors may influence and contribute to the development of this disease.
