Women made visible: a different perspective on the history of the Institute of Tropical Medicine in Portugal, 1943-1966.

This work focuses on the scientific research conducted by women at Portugal's Institute of Tropical Medicine between 1943 and 1966. The Institute's scientific journal documents the participation of women in tropical medicine during this period. Their publications addressed a variety of subjects and resulted from research carried out in the metropolis as well as Portugal's overseas colonies.

Between republicans and freemasons: A lost zoological collection found in a very particular school.

A lost zoological collection was found in an old school in Lisbon, Portugal. Taxidermied animals, fauna preserved in glass jars, skeletons, and fossilized shells were all part of this collection. The research showed that those animals were used by libertarian teachers in science classes in a school created by republicans and freemasons in the transition from the 19th to the 20th century.

Science in support of racial mixture: Charles-Augustin Vandermonde's Enlightenment program for improving the health and beauty of the human species.

In 1756, while he was regent of the Faculté de Médecine in Paris, Charles-Augustin Vandermonde published his Essai sur la Manière de Perfectionner l'Espèce Humaine. This treatise was situated within the French-led medical movement of meliorism, meant to increase public health by boosting the medical arrangement of marriages from all strata of society. What made Vandermonde different from his colleagues is that he was not just looking for a way to improve the health of society: he was also proposing a series of measures meant to increase the beauty of humankind.
