Grassland birds are among the most threatened and fastest declining terrestrial vertebrate species in Europe, principally due to agricultural intensification and transformation. The little bustard is a priority grassland bird under the European Directive (2009/147/CE) that led to the classification of a network of Special Protected Areas (SPAs) in Portugal. A third national survey carried out in 2022 reveals a worsening of an ongoing population collapse at a national scale.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates how mixed-species breeding colonies of birds affect ectoparasite infestation, focusing on the lesser kestrel and several other bird species in Portugal, but finds limited understanding of how colony traits impact parasite presence.
  • - Researchers sampled ectoparasites like flies and mites across four bird species, discovering each host species had a unique set of parasites irrespective of colony size or density.
  • - The abundance of the most common ectoparasite, Carnus hemapterus, was more influenced by the makeup of the colony—specifically, the number of nests per host species—than by the overall colony size, suggesting complex dynamics in host-parasite relationships due to increased species interactions.
