Fertility preservation is a major concern for women with ulcerative colitis who require surgical treatment. Previous studies have shown that the risk of infertility after restorative proctocolectomy is approximately four times higher. However, this risk appears to be lower in patients who undergo minimally invasive approaches, such as laparoscopic surgery.

An Overview of Robotic Colorectal Surgery Adoption and Training in Brazil.

Robotic surgical systems have rapidly become integrated into colorectal surgery practice in recent years, particularly for rectal resections, where the advantages of robotic platforms over conventional laparoscopy are more pronounced. However, as with any technological advancement, the initial high costs can be a limiting factor, leading to unequal health service access, especially in middle- and lower-income countries. A narrative review was conducted with the objective of providing an overview of the escalating adoption, current training programmes, and certification process of robotic colorectal surgery in Brazil.

Nutritional status in perianal Crohn's disease: are we underestimating the impact?

Symptomatic perianal disease is common in patients with Crohn's disease (CD), and perianal fistulas represent the primary form of anal involvement. This type of involvement is associated with a poor prognosis and a disabling course. The treatment is challenging and involves both surgical and medical approaches.

Methods: The 13-item Validated Breast Aesthetic Scale was developed after several internal meetings, and worded to be understood by a nonspecialist.

Competing Endogenous RNA in Colorectal Cancer: An Analysis for Colon, Rectum, and Rectosigmoid Junction.

Background: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a heterogeneous cancer. Its treatment depends on its anatomical site and distinguishes between colon, rectum, and rectosigmoid junction cancer. This study aimed to identify diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers using networks of CRC-associated transcripts that can be built based on competing endogenous RNAs (ceRNA).

Exercise regimens other than pelvic floor muscle training cannot increase pelvic muscle strength-a systematic review.

Background: Although pelvic floor muscle training is widely recommendedin the literature as the gold standard for the treatment of pelvic floor dysfunctions, such as urinary incontinence, interest in other exercise regimens is increasing. However, it is unknown whether other exercise regimens increase pelvic floor muscle strength.

Methods: This was a systematic review of randomized clinical trials found in PEDro, tridatabase, Cochrane and PubMed on the efficacy of nonspecific exercises, such as Pilates, the Paula method, and hypopressive exercises, in strengthening pelvic floor muscles in adults without underlying neurological disorders and with or without pelvic floor dysfunction.

Transmural Migration of Gossypiboma with Intraluminal Small-Bowel Obstruction: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND The term "gossypiboma" refers to a textile matrix surrounded by a foreign-body reaction. Gauze, surgical dressings, and sponges are the most frequently retained materials after abdominal surgeries. The incidence is variable and underreported, mostly due to the legal consequences of their discovery, but also because many patients remain asymptomatic.

Does CO2 pneumoperitoneum in laparoscopy interfere with collagen deposition in abdominal surgical wounds?

Purpose To determine by histomorphometric analysis whether CO2 pneumoperitoneum interferes with collagen deposition in surgical wounds in the aponeurosis of rats. Methods This experiment involved 80 male Wistar rats, randomly allocated into four groups according to pneumoperitoneum period (PRE: 30 min preoperatively; POST: 30 min postoperatively; PP: 30 min pre- and postoperatively; C: control group). CO2 pneumoperitoneum was insufflated to 5 mmHg of pressure.

Methods: Forty female rats underwent segmental resection of 1 cm of the left colon followed by end-to-end anastomosis. They were randomly assigned to four groups (n=10 each), a sham group; two groups were submitted to Hyperbaric Oxygen therapy (HBOT) with and without induced ischemia and the induced ischemia group without HBOT.

Effectiveness of transcutaneous tibial nerve stimulation at two different thresholds for overactive bladder symptoms in older women: a randomized controlled clinical trial.

Objectives: To compare the effectiveness of transcutaneous tibial nerve stimulation (TTNS) at two different current amplitude thresholds (sensory and motor) in terms of urinary habit, symptoms and the degree of discomfort of overactive bladder (OAB) in older women.

Study Design: This is a randomized, controlled, 3-arm blinded trial. One hundred and one patients attending secondary care with OAB were randomized into one of three groups: group 1, TTNS sensitivity threshold (n = 39); group 2, TTNS motor threshold (n = 33); and control group 3 (n = 29).

[Purpose] To assess the influence of moderate physical exercise on pelvic floor muscle electromyographic (EMG) biofeedback signal in female non-athletes. [Subjects and Methods] A prospective, non-randomized study of 90 adult females (age ≥18 years) divided into three groups: Intervention (I), which began physical exercise upon study enrollment; Moderate Exercise (ME), comprising those who already engaged in physical activity; and Sedentary (S), comprising those who had a sedentary lifestyle. All participants underwent EMG biofeedback of the pelvic floor muscles upon study enrollment (T1) and at the end of the third subsequent month (T2).

Pneumoretroperitoneum and Sepsis After Transanal Endoscopic Resection of a Rectal Lateral Spreading Tumor.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to analyze timing and frequency of complications following free tissue autologous reconstruction in a single tertiary care institution.

Methods: From August 2012 to December 2013, all patients operated on for abdominal-based free flap breast reconstruction at a single institution were included. Complications were identified and risk factors associated with them were analyzed using SPSS software.
