Falls in elderly patients are not treated according to national recommendations.

Introduction: The aim of this study was to evaluate health professionals' compliance with recommendations from the Danish Health Authority (DHA) concerning falls, to study the prevalence of acute hospital visits due to falls, and to compare characteristics of fall patients in two geographically and socioeconomically different areas of Denmark.

Methods: The study was conducted in the emergency departments (ED) of Slagelse Hospital (SH) and Nykøbing Falster Hospital (NFH), both located in Denmark. Included were individuals > 50 years visiting the EDs from January 1 to March 31, 2014 who reported a fall.

Plasmid-mediated resistance to cephalosporins and fluoroquinolones in various Escherichia coli sequence types isolated from rooks wintering in Europe.

Extended-spectrum-beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing, AmpC beta-lactamase-producing, and plasmid-mediated quinolone resistance (PMQR) gene-positive strains of Escherichia coli were investigated in wintering rooks (Corvus frugilegus) from eight European countries. Fecal samples (n = 1,073) from rooks wintering in the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Serbia, Spain, and Switzerland were examined. Resistant isolates obtained from selective cultivation were screened for ESBL, AmpC, and PMQR genes by PCR and sequencing.

Elderly individuals often have different causes of fever of unknown origin compared to young persons. While infections dominate in the young, system diseases like temporal arteritis and polymyalgia rheumatica, malignancy and drug fever are common causes in the elderly. The symptoms may be blunted with lack of fever.

Tissue factor (TF) is a glycosylated transmembrane protein, expressed by endothelial and other cells. Its best known function is the initiation of thrombus formation, but TF also participates in inflammation processes. This article presents the established knowledge of TF expression in endothelial cells and current opinions on encrypted TF form and mechanisms of its activation.
