Subsyndromal delirium (SSD) in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is associated with an increased morbidity with unknown post-discharge functional and cognitive outcomes. We performed a prospective multicenter study to analyze the mental status of patients during their first 72 h after ICU admission and its trajectory, with follow-ups at 3 and 6 months after hospital discharge. Amongst the 106 included patients, SSD occurred in 24.

Materials And Methods: We performed a prospective, multicenter, observational study to evaluate in 37 microbiologically documented VAP, the kinetics of C-reactive protein (CRP), procalcitonin (PCT), mid-region fragment of pro-adrenomedullin (MR-proADM). The kinetics of each variable, from day 1 to 6 of therapy, was assessed with a time dependent analysis comparing survivors and non-survivors.

Helium was discovered in 1868 by the French astronomer Pierre-Jules-César Janssen and was first used as a therapeutic treatment for airway obstruction by Barach almost 70 years later, in 1934. Heliox is characterized by its low density, which makes it more fluid under conditions of turbulence, thus minimizing airway pressure and facilitating the occurrence of laminar flow. The present article describes two clinical cases of patients with status asthmaticus subjected to mechanical ventilation and refractory to treatment in whom heliox was used, which allowed optimization of the efficacy of conventional pharmacological treatments.

Methods: We performed a prospective, multicenter, observational study to evaluate predictive accuracy of biomarker kinetics, namely C-reactive protein (CRP), procalcitonin (PCT), mid-region fragment of pro-adrenomedullin (MR-proADM), for VAP management in 211 patients receiving mechanical ventilation for >72 h.
Heat stroke (HS) is defined as a severe elevation of core body temperature along with central nervous system dysfunction. Exertional heat stroke (EHS) with acute liver failure (ALF) is a rare condition. The authors report the case of a 25-year-old man with a history of cognitive enhancers' intake who developed hyperthermia and neurological impairment while running an outdoor marathon.

Several biomarkers have been shown to be useful in infection diagnosis.
Methods: We conducted a single-centre, prospective, observational study segregating patients submitted to elective colorectal surgery with primary anastomosis, CRP and PCT were measured daily.
Background: Vancomycin is the primary treatment for infections caused by methicilin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). The association of vancomycin treatment failures with increased vancomycin minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) is a well-recognized problem. A number of single-centre studies have identified progressive increases in glycopeptide MICs for S.

Material And Methods: We present seven cases of severe imported malaria, admitted to an intensive care unit between 2000 and 2010, with particular focus on risk factors, clinical presentation, treatment and results.
Results: All patients had a history of recent travel to African endemic areas for malaria.
Context: Post-intensive care unit (ICU) mortality predictors are unknown.
Objective: To assess post-ICU in-hospital mortality predictors.
Materials And Methods: Analysis of 296 patients discharged alive from a medical-surgical ICU during an 18-month period.

Objectives: Therapeutic hypothermia following cardiorespiratory arrest has been demonstrated to have cardio- and neuroprotective effects, resulting in improved survival and better neurological outcomes. The objective of this study was to assess the outcomes of patients undergoing therapeutic hypothermia following cardiorespiratory arrest.
Methods: A prospective, 10-month observational study of patients admitted to an intensive care unit and undergoing therapeutic hypothermia after cardiorespiratory arrest was undertaken.

Background: About one third of hospital mortality in critically ill patients occurs after Intensive Care Unit (ICU) discharge. Some authors have recently hypothesized that unresolved or latent inflammation and sepsis may be an important factor that contributes to death following successful discharge from the ICU.
Aim: The aim of our study was to determine the ability of the clinical and inflammatory markers at ICU discharge to predict post-ICU mortality.
Introduction: The immediate identification of infectious tuberculosis and implementation of effective isolation measures, are a priority of the national policies for disease control.
Objectives: To identify clinical predictor's factors related with sputum smear-positive, in patients with pulmonary tuberculosis diagnosis.
Population And Methods: This was a retrospective study involving 289 patients admitted consecutively with the diagnosis of tuberculosis (ICD-9-CM: 010-018) through the emergency department of a Central Hospital.
Introduction: Fulminant hepatic failure (FHF) refers to the rapid development of severe acute liver injury with impaired synthetic function, coagulopathy, and encephalopathy in a person who previously had a normal liver or had a well-compensated liver disease. It is a rare complication in critically ill patients and carries a very bad prognosis. Serum C-reactive protein (CRP), a useful marker of infection, is produced exclusively by the liver.

Diagnosis is established via histological examination of the muscle biopsy.
Case Presentation: We present the case of a 53-year-old woman, born in Guinea-Bissau, with a history of locally advanced breast cancer, diagnosed ten months previously.
Grey Platelet disease is a rare disease characterized by morphologic changes in platelets alpha-granules. These proteins are essential for the homeostasis, so the patients with this blood defect present hemorrhagic disturbs. The blood discrasia is usually mild, however some patients could present more serious manifestations, usually after a severe trauma.

Methods: During a 14-month period, we prospectively included all patients with sepsis admitted to an intensive care unit (ICU).
Introduction: Unlike other agents used in the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus, metformin has been shown to reduce mortality in obese patients. It is therefore being increasingly used in higher doses. The major concern of many physicians is a possible risk of lactic acidosis.
