Background: Studies on agitation in internal medicine departments are scarce, especially regarding how doctors and nurses act in these situations. The objective of this study was to clarify how agitation is dealt with in these departments.
Methods: This prospective observational study was performed in the internal medicine departments of four Portuguese hospitals.
We describe a case of a 46-year-old woman diagnosed with localized PTC 20 years ago, having already undergone several treatments with iodine-131 and then treatment with lenvatinib for metastatic disease, to which she developed intolerance. In 2020, in addition to pleural, thoracic, and abdominal lymph node metastasis, progression with symptomatic vertebral bone metastasis was detected, which led to the equation of new therapeutic options. In this context, a genetic/molecular test was carried out, which identified the BRAF V600E mutation and enabled the start of treatment with dabrafenib/trametinib since June 2020.

Alcohol withdrawal syndrome (AWS) can result from a marked decrease or sudden cessation of alcohol consumption and seems to be related to excess catecholamines that induce a cardiomyotoxic effect. Wernicke's encephalopathy (WE), mostly associated with alcoholism, is caused by a deficiency in vitamin B1 (thiamine) and is severe if not supplemented in a timely manner.

Here, we studied the dominant negative SNARE (dnSNARE) mouse model to dissect the role of astrocyte-derived signaling in corticolimbic circuits, with implications for cognitive processing. We found that the blockade of gliotransmitter release in astrocytes triggers a critical desynchronization of neural theta oscillations between dorsal hippocampus and prefrontal cortex.

Here, we studied theta oscillations within the hippocampus (HPC)-amygdala (AMY)-medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) network in exploration of a novel environment and subsequent familiarization through repeated exposures to that same environment; in addition, we assessed how concomitant stress exposure could disrupt this activity and impair both behavioral processes. Local field potentials (LFP) were simultaneously recorded from dorsal and ventral hippocampus (dHPC and vHPC, respectively), basolateral amygdala (BLA) and mPFC in freely behaving rats while they were exposed to a novel environment, then repeatedly re-exposed over the course of 3 weeks to that same environment and, finally, on re-exposure to a novel unfamiliar environment.

To unravel the functional impact of progressive stress in cortico-limbic networks we measured neural activity and spectral coherences between the ventral hippocampus (vHIP) and the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) in rats subjected to short term stress (STS) and chronic unpredictable stress (CUS). CUS exposure consistently disrupted the spectral coherence between both areas for a wide range of frequencies, whereas STS exposure failed to trigger such effect.
