Objectives: In the present study the relationship between illness coping and health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in patients after closed head injury (CHI) was analyzed. Furthermore, the study was performed to assess the relative significance of clinical, neuroradiological, psychosocial variables and coping activities after CHI. We hypothesized that the effect of a depressive coping style is significantly stronger than that of all other variables considered.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFBackground: The neuropsychological effects of lumbar puncture and shunting in terms of cognitive functioning and quality of life were analyzed prospectively in four patients with malabsorptive hydrocephalus who became symptomatic in the chronic state after aneurysmal subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH).
Methods: A comprehensive battery of neuropsychological tests was applied to four patients before and shortly after lumbar puncture and six months later. In three of them a shunt has been inserted, one patient was treated by repeated lumbar punctures.

Background: Many case reports and small series addressing the surgical management of spinal cord cavernoma have been published. However, only few larger series that would allow identifying operative strategies exist. After having treated 30 patients, we feel encouraged to report our experiences.

It is believed that aneurysm surgery has the potential to increase the risk of cerebral vasospasm due to surgical manipulations of the parent vessels and brain tissue. Consequently, 1-stage surgery of MIAs, which usually takes longer and requires more manipulation, could even further increase the risk of vasospasm.

In 50 adult patients, computerized tomography scan data from C0 to C3 were transformed into a 3D spine model. View Article and Find Full Text PDFBackground: This prospective study employs anisotropic diffusion-weighted (ADW) magnetic resonance imaging for the integration of individual spatial information concerning the principal motor pathways into the operating room during microneurosurgery in the central region. We hypothesize that the three-dimensional (3-D) visualization of the pyramidal tract position (PTV) in a neuronavigation system based on ADW provides valid information concerning the position and extension of the principal motor pathways.
Methods: A total of 13 consecutive patients with lesions adjacent to the pyramidal tracts and the central region underwent microneurosurgery with the help of pyramidal tract visualization (PTV).
