Uncovering malpractice in appendectomies: a review of 234 cases.

Background: General surgery is a "high-risk specialty" with respect to medical malpractice rates, and appendicitis is one of the most common diagnoses encountered by practitioners. Our objectives were to detail issues affecting malpractice litigation regarding appendicitis and appendectomies, including outcomes, awards, alleged causes of malpractice, and other factors instrumental in determining legal responsibility and increasing patient safety.

Study Design: Publically available federal and state court records were examined for pertinent jury verdict and settlement reports.

This study, coordinated by the SFTG (French branch of European Environmental Mutagen Society), included 38 participants from Europe, Japan and America. Clastogens (bleomycin, urethane), including base and nucleoside analogs (5-fluorouracil and cytosine arabinoside), aneugens and/or polyploidy inducers (colchicine, diethylstilboestrol, griseofulvin and thiabendazole), as well as non-genotoxic compounds (mannitol and clofibrate), were tested. In this report, results are presented from an international study of the in vitro micronucleus assay using mouse lymphoma L5178Y cells. This study was coordinated by an organizing committee supported by the SFTG (the French branch of the European Environmental Mutagen Society). Test chemicals included mannitol, bleomycin, 5-fluorouracil, colchicine and griseofulvin.

Mouse lymphoma thymidine kinase gene mutation assay: International Workshop on Genotoxicity Tests Workgroup report--Plymouth, UK 2002.

The Mouse Lymphoma Assay (MLA) Workgroup of the International Workshop on Genotoxicity Tests (IWGT) met on June 28th and 29th, 2002, in Plymouth, England. This meeting of the MLA group was devoted to discussing the criteria for assay acceptance and appropriate approaches to data evaluation. Prior to the meeting, the group conducted an extensive analysis of data from both the microwell and soft agar versions of the assay.

The Mouse Lymphoma Assay (MLA) Workgroup of the International Workshop on Genotoxicity Test Procedures held a second harmonization meeting just prior to the U.S. Environmental Mutagen Society Meeting in New Orleans, LA, in April 2000.

The concentration of enkephalin-like material in the chick retina is light dependent.

The enkephalin-like immunoreactivity in the retina of chicks has been studied using immunohistochemical and radioimmunoassay techniques. The histochemical experiments showed that the immunoreactivity was confined to a subpopulation of amacrine cells in the inner nuclear layer which projected processes into sublaminae 1 and 3-5 of the inner plexiform layer. The distribution of the immunoreactivity was markedly influenced by the ambient lighting conditions: it was reduced in the dark and restored by a period in the light.
