Outbreak of Multidrug-resistant Endophthalmitis Due to Contaminated Trypan Blue Solution.

Purpose: To report the investigation of an outbreak of multidrug-resistant (MDR) endophthalmitis in 13 patients after cataract surgery and to emphasize on the importance of clinical profile, risk factors, and treatment outcomes.

Methods: This was a hospital-based, retrospective case study with 13 consecutive patients who had man- ual small-incision cataract surgery with intraocular lens (IOL) implantation and developed acute postoperative endophthalmitis. The anterior chamber taps, vitreous aspirates, and environ- mental surveillance specimens were inoculated for culturing.

Safety and efficacy of riboflavin-assisted collagen cross-linking of cornea in progressive keratoconus patients: A prospective study in North East India.

Introduction: Riboflavin- and ultraviolet (UV)-A-mediated collagen cross-linking of the cornea is a frequently used therapeutic measure for the treatment of progressive keratoconus (PK). First, riboflavin increases cross-linking and second, it serves as a protective shield to other deep ocular structures. However, pharmacogenomic variation in riboflavin efficacy is reported.

Construction and validation of logMAR visual acuity charts in seven Indian languages.

Purpose: The evaluation of visual impairment requires the measurement of visual acuity with a validated and standard logMAR visual acuity chart. We aimed to construct and validate new logMAR visual acuity chart in Indian languages (Hindi, Bengali, Telugu, Urdu, Kannada, Malayalam, and Assamese).

Methods: The commonly used font in each language was chosen as the reference and designed to fit the 5 × 5 grid (Adobe Photoshop).

Cyclophotocoagulation-induced sympathetic ophthalmia in a Coats' disease patient supported by histopathology and immunohistochemistry.

We describe a case of a 13-year-old male patient of Coats' disease who developed sympathetic ophthalmia (SO) following contact diode laser cyclophotocoagulation. There was no history of invasive surgery or any perforating injuries preceding cyclodestructive therapy. The eye had neovascular glaucoma secondary to Coats' disease, which was treated once with contact cyclophotocoagulation.

Bilateral spontaneous anterior dislocation of intraocular lens with the capsular bag in a patient with pseudoexfoliation.

We report a rare case of bilateral spontaneous anterior partial in-the-bag intraocular lens (IOL) dislocation in a 75-year-old man with pseudoexfoliation (PXF). He underwent uneventful phacoemulsification in both eyes with in-the-bag IOL implantation 9 years back. In the right eye, single piece poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) IOL (+19 D) and in the left eye, single piece acrylic foldable IOL (+19 D) were implanted.

Femtosecond laser-assisted keratopigmentation for the management of visual disabilities due to peripheral iridectomies.

Purpose: To report the technique and result of keratopigmentation using a femtosecond laser for the treatment of functional visual disabilities caused by peripheral iridectomies.

Design: Case report.

Methods: Two eyes of 2 patients underwent femtosecond laser-assisted keratopigmentation (FLAK) for moderate to severe visual dysfunction secondary to peripheral iridectomies.

Indications for and outcomes of deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty in mucopolysaccharidoses.

Purpose: To describe the outcome of deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty (DALK) for visually significant corneal clouding in patients with mucopolysaccharidoses (MPS).

Methods: A retrospective consecutive case series of patients with MPS and corneal clouding were analyzed at a tertiary eye hospital. A review of the English literature regarding MPS and DALK was performed.

Mucous membrane grafting for the post-Steven-Johnson syndrome symblepharon: a case report.

An 18-year-old woman was referred with late sequelae of chloroquine-induced Steven-Johnson syndrome. At the time of presentation, the symblepharon was involving the upper lids to almost the whole of the cornea, and part of the lower bulbar conjunctiva with the lower lid bilaterally. Other ocular examinations were not possible due to the symblepharon.

Verteporfin photodynamic therapy of retinal capillary hemangioblastoma in von Hippel-Lindau disease.

An 18-year-old boy presented to us with bilateral retinal hemangioblastoma and von Hippel-Lindau disease with history of cerebral capillary hemangioblastoma and embryonic cell carcinoma of left testes. The vision in the right eye was already lost with development of secondary closed angle glaucoma, optic atrophy with subsequent development of bullous keratopathy. The multiple retinal angiomatous lesions in the seeing left eye were treated with various modalities like triple freeze thaw cryopexy, focal lasers and transpupillary thermo therapy in multiple sittings over a period of almost 20 years since detection.

Clear lens extraction and intraocular lens implantation in a case of microspherophakia with secondary angle closure glaucoma.

Phacoemulsification with implantation of single-piece acrylic foldable intraocular lens (IOL) in a 19-year-old boy with microspherophakia, high myopia and angle closure glaucoma is described. The associated myopia and angle closure glaucoma was severely compromising the quality of life. Post-surgical visual recovery was 20/20 with sustained normal intraocular pressure.

Indirect optic nerve injury in two-wheeler riders in northeast India.

Purpose: To investigate the association of posterior indirect traumatic optic neuropathy and superior temporal orbital rim injury in two-wheeler riders and documentation of the clinical profile of such cases.

Design: Retrospective observational study.

Materials And Methods: Records of all patients reporting with cranio-orbital injury and vision loss following road traffic accidents between October 1994 and April 2006 were reviewed and from them cases with vision loss solely from indirect optic nerve injury were taken up for study.

Descemet's membrane detachment caused by inadvertent vancomycin injection.

Descemet's membrane detachment is a condition with a wide range of etiologies. The most common cause is a localized detachment occurring after cataract surgery. We report a case of vancomycin injection-induced Descemet's membrane detachment as a complication following a routine cataract surgery and its management.

Orbital abscess and hemi-occlusion of the central retinal vein in a child.

Orbital abscess is a serious infection which demands immediate and aggressive management. A case of orbital abscess associated with central retinal vein occlusion in a seven year old girl is reported. The diagnosis was established by computerised tomographic scanning and confirmed by bacteriological examination.

Clinical spectrum of spontaneous carotid-cavernous fistula.

A carotid-cavernous fistula (CCF) is an abnormal communication between the cavernous sinus and the carotid arterial system. A CCF is divided into two categories, direct and indirect. Direct fistulas usually account for 70 to 90% of all CCF.

Intravitreal gnathostomiasis and review of literature.

Intravitreal gnathostomiasis is a rare disease. To our knowledge, only five case reports are available in the literature wherein the parasites were surgically removed from the vitreous cavity and the species were identified. In this report, we document the clinical features of intravitreal gnathostomiasis along with the route of entry and parasitic migration pattern in ocular tissue, surgical management, and electron microscopic features of the retrieved advanced third-stage larva of Gnathostoma spinigerum (aL3) for a 48-year-old Indian woman with excellent postsurgical visual recovery.

Visual performance: Comparison of foldable intraocular lenses.

Purpose: To compare best distance visual acuity, color perception, and contrast sensitivity between eyes with an AcrySof Natural intraocular lens (IOL) (Alcon Laboratories Inc.) and fellow eye with an AcrySof IOL and to compare results in the IOL groups to those in normal, similarly aged patients with clear phakic eyes.
