Physical, chemical, and biological processes within sewers significantly alter sewage composition during conveyance. This leads to the formation of sulfide and methane-compounds that contribute to sewer corrosion and greenhouse gas emissions. Reliable modeling of these compounds is essential for effective sewer management, but the development of machine learning (ML) models is hindered by differences in data accessibility and sampling frequencies of water quality variables.

A comprehensive understanding of the environmental impacts and economic benefits associated with various wetland plant resourcing methods is critical for advancing both plant resource recovery and the application of wetlands in wastewater treatment. In this study, life cycle assessment was employed to evaluate the environmental impacts and costs of seven wetland plant recovery methods.

Remediating soil contaminated with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) presents a significant environmental challenge due to their toxic and carcinogenic properties. Traditional PAHs remediation methods-chemical, thermal, and bioremediation-along with conventional soil-washing agents like surfactants and cyclodextrins face challenges of cost, ecological harm, and inefficiency. Here we show an effective and environmentally friendly calixarene derivative for PAHs removal through soil washing.

This study combines the use of a Life Cycle Assessment and the Patient Rule Induction Method, accounting for possibilities that could achieve net-zero carbon emissions by exploring multiple plausible future profiles of sludge treatment and disposal. Results show that reducing sludge landfill and increasing anaerobic digestion are effective methods to facilitate GHG reduction.

The experiments showed that when the O pressure increased from 2 to 10 psig , the average effluent DO concentration during steady-state phases increased from 0.02 to 4.

In this study, we systemically evaluated the expanded unified model-TL2.1 for its long-term simulation of TB-EPS and LB-EPS.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFThe quantity of tightly bound extracellular polymeric substances (TB-EPS) and loosely bound extracellular polymeric substances (LB-EPS) are recognized to be crucial for activated sludge flocculability and settleability. However, the generation and consumption mechanisms of TB-EPS and LB-EPS are vague, and there is no effective model to quantitatively predict LB-EPS and TB-EPS. In this work, a decrease in LB-EPS and TB-EPS was verified to increase the absolute value of the zeta potential and decrease the sludge settling volume, which affects the flocculation and settling performance of sludge.

Cells of strain YN2 were aerobic, motile, pleomorphic rods, mostly twisted, and contained the water-insoluble yellow zeaxanthin dirhamnoside. Strain YN2 grew at 10-40 °C (optimum, 30 °C), pH 5.

Life cycle assessment (LCA) of sewage sludge treatment was carried out to estimate the environmental impacts of six scenarios: (1) co-digestion of sludge and food waste; (2) co-gasification of sludge and woody waste; (3) co-incineration of sludge and used oil; (4) landfilling; (5) incineration; and (6) anaerobic digestion combined with incineration. Results demonstrate that the resource recovery had a substantial contribution to the environmental performance of the sludge treatment, while the degree of contribution was largely affected by various treatment scenarios and diverse impact categories.

However, studies have focused only on the direct relationship between C/N and nitrogen removal efficiency but disregarded the significant role of soluble microbial products (SMPs) as an intermediate electron station. In this work, the contribution of SMPs to TN removal for treating wastewater with different C/N in a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) was investigated to extend relevance from C/N-TN removal to C/N-SMP-TN removal.
