Vacuum UV (VUV) irradiation has advantage in coupling oxidants for organics removal because VUV can dissociate water to produce reactive oxygen species (ROS) in situ and decompose oxidants rapidly. In this study, the synergistic activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) by VUV and ozone (O) was explored via developing a novel integrated VUV/O/PMS process, and the performance and mechanisms of VUV/O/PMS for levofloxacin (LEV) degradation were investigated systematically. Results indicated that VUV/O/PMS could effectively degrade LEV, and the degradation rate was 1.

Algal blooms in source water can cause algal organic matter (AOM)-related membrane fouling in drinking water treatment. Herein, the effects of vacuum ultraviolet/ozone (VUV/O) pretreatment on alleviating ultrafiltration membrane fouling caused by AOM, including extracellular organic matter (EOM) and intracellular organic matter (IOM), were investigated systematically. Compared to its sub-processes (UV/O, O, VUV, and UV), VUV/O pretreatment showed the best performance on AOM removal and membrane fouling mitigation.

Extracellular organic matter (EOM) produced by algal blooms in source water is detrimental to drinking water treatment processes and supplied water quality. Ozonation has been used to treat algal EOM, but it could not mineralize EOM effectively. In this study, mineralization and characteristics variation of EOM by vacuum ultraviolet/ozone (VUV/O) and its sub-processes were comprehensively investigated.

Vacuum UV (VUV) technology has attracted much attention because it effectively splits water to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) in situ and has the advantages of UV. So far, the synergistic mechanisms, formation pathways and contributions of ROS in VUV/Fe/HO process have not been extensively studied. Herein, complete removal (at 4 min) and 63.

Fluoroquinolones in water environments have caused worldwide concern due to negative effects on human health and ecological environment. Heretofore, synergistic mechanisms of Fe/HO process enhanced via vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) irradiation for fluoroquinolones removal, and generation ways and contribution evaluations of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in integrated VUV/Fe/HO were not reported systematically. This work comparatively investigated norfloxacin (NOR, typical fluoroquinolones) degradation in VUV/Fe/HO and its sub-processes.

Fluoroquinolones in aquatic environments have caused worldwide concern due to the negative effects on human health and ecological environment. So far, the performance and mechanism for fluoroquinolones removal by the synergistic activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) via vacuum UV (VUV) irradiation and Fe are still blank. Herein, compared with its sub-processes, VUV/Fe/PMS process significantly improved the degradation and mineralization efficiencies of three fluoroquinolones.

Bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (BRONJ) is a detrimental side effect of the long-term administration of bisphosphonates. Although macrophages were reported to be an important mediator of BRONJ, the detailed potential mechanism of BRONJ remains unclear. Here, we reported an elevated TLR-4 expression in macrophages under action of zoledronic acid (ZA), resulting in enhanced M1 macrophage polarization and decreased M2 macrophage polarization both in vitro and in vivo.
