Metolachlor, the chiral herbicide, inhibits the very-long-chain fatty acid (VLCFA) synthesis; elucidating the enantioselectivity between - and -metolachlor in the toxicological difference will facilitate the understanding of the site of action. We found that the endogenous accumulation of C22 VLCFAs decreased in both -/-metolachlor -treated plants by 6, 12, and 24 h after treatment, with more significant reduction in the isomer group. Gene expression of glutathione -transferase members were obviously induced upon treatments with or isomer; both OsGSTU1 and OsGSTU4 can metabolize metolachlor effectively, with isomer as the preference by directly catalyzing the conjugation between -metolachlor and glutathione.

Article Synopsis
  • Mycobacterium abscessus skin infections are a growing concern, as traditional antibiotics often fail, leading to the need for new treatment options like aminolevulinic acid photodynamic therapy (ALA-PDT) combined with antibiotics.
  • The study treated eight patients with M. abscessus infections post-cosmetic surgery using ALA-PDT and various antibiotics, finding positive results with no recurrences during follow-up.
  • In vitro tests revealed that while ALA-PDT effectively killed M. abscessus, certain strains required higher doses due to their stronger biofilm formation and genetic mutations affecting metabolism, highlighting the potential for enhanced bacterial killing when using ALA-PDT alongside antibiotics.

  • Translational control is key in regulating apoptosis, with the EIF4 protein family influencing how mRNA is translated, impacting breast cancer risk.
  • The study used Mendelian randomization with genetic instrumental variables (EIF4E, EIF4B, EIF4A, EIF4EBP2) and focused on breast cancer cases from the BCAC consortium, analyzing both ER+ and ER- samples.
  • Findings indicate that EIF4E increases breast cancer risk and shows a weak link to ER+ cancer but a stronger association with ER- cancer, while EIF4A does not affect ER+ cancer risk but raises the risk for ER- cancer; EIF4B and EIF4EBP2 showed no significant effects.

High HO levels are widely present at the infection sites or in the biofilm microenvironment. Herein, hemin with peroxidase-like catalytic activity and its substrate, 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS), are simultaneously introduced into a liposomal nanoparticle containing thermosensitive 2,2'-azobis[2-(2-imidazolin-2-yl) propane] dihydrochloride (AIBI)-loaded bovine serum albumin (BAG), rationally constructing an HO-activatable liposomal nanobomb (Lipo@BHA) for combating biofilm-associated bacterial infections with high performance. In the presence of HO, hemin can catalyze the conversion of ABTS into its oxidized form (ABTS·) with strong near-infrared (NIR) absorption, which produces photonic hyperpyrexia to cause the decomposition of AIBI into oxygen-independent alkyl radicals (·R) and nitrogen (N) microbubbles.

Introduction: Abdominal aortic aneurysm is a progressive, segmental, abdominal aortic dilation associated with a high mortality rate. Abdominal aortic aneurysms with diameters larger than 55 mm are associated with a high risk of rupture, and the most effective treatment options are surgical repair. Close observation and lifestyle adjustments are recommended for smaller abdominal aortic aneurysms with lower rupture risk.

Hyaluronic acid-based hydrogels have been broadly used in medical applications due to their remarkable properties such as biocompatibility, biodegradability, super hydroscopicity, non-immunogenic effect, etc. However, the inherent weak and hydrophilic polysaccharide structure of pure hyaluronic acid (HA) hydrogels has limited their potential use in muco-adhesiveness, wound dressing, and 3D printing. In this research, we developed in-situ forming of catechol-modified HA hydrogels with improved mechanical properties involving blue-light curing crosslinking reaction.

The complexities of energy transfer mechanisms in the flagella of mammalian sperm flagella have been intensively investigated and demonstrate significant diversity across species. Enzymatic shuttles, particularly adenylate kinase (AK) and creatine kinase (CK), are pivotal in the efficient transfer of intracellular ATP, showing distinct tissue- and species-specificity. Here, the expression profiles of AK and CK were investigated in mice and found to fall into four subgroups, of which Subgroup III AKs were observed to be unique to the male reproductive system and conserved across chordates.

Bacterial wound infection has emerged as a pivotal threat to human health worldwide, and the situation has worsened owing to the gradual increase in antibiotic-resistant bacteria caused by the improper use of antibiotics. To reduce the use of antibiotics and avoid the increase in antibiotic-resistant bacteria, researchers are increasingly paying attention to  photodynamic therapy, which uses light to produce reactive oxygen species to kill bacteria. Treating bacteria-infected wounds by photodynamic therapy requires fixing the photosensitizer (PS) at the wound site and maintaining a certain level of wound humidity.

Freeze-thaw cycles (FTCs) cause dynamic microscale changes in ions and solvents. During freezing, heavy metals adsorbed on zero-valent iron (M-ZVI) and protons are excluded by ice crystals and concentrated in the liquid-like grain boundary region. The high proton concentration in this region leads to the dissolution of the passivation layer of ZVI.
