Background: The demand for organ transplants, both globally and in South Korea, substantially exceeds the supply, a situation that might have been aggravated by the enactment of the Life-Sustaining Treatment Decision Act (LSTDA) in February 2018. This legislation may influence emergency medical procedures and the availability of organs from brain-dead donors. This study aimed to assess LSTDA's impact, introduced in February 2018, on organ donation status in out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) patients in a metropolitan city and identified related factors.

Comparison of three HPLC analytical methods: ELSD, RID, and UVD for the analysis of xylitol in foods.

In this study, xylitol, a common sweetener and sucrose substitute in low-calorie foods, was quantified by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). During the establishment of the analytical method, three representative detection approaches, ultraviolet detector (UVD), evaporative light scattering detector, and refractive index detector, were compared and applied to determine the xylitol content in various foods distributed in Korea. Here, we present the synthesis and characterization of a novel 2D crystalline framework, named , which mainly consists of carbon and oxygen in a 2:1 molar ratio and features crown ether holes in its skeletal structure. The covalent-frameworked 2D crown ether can be synthesized on a gram-scale and exhibits fine chemical stability in various environments, including acid, base, and different organic solvents. The efficiently activates KI through the strong coordination of K with crown ether holes in a rigid framework, which enhances the nucleophilicity of I and significantly improves its catalytic activity for CO fixation with epoxides.

Successful treatment of facet joint synovial cyst through percutaneous rupture: a case report.

Facet joint synovial cysts can cause significant back pain and radiculopathy. Treatment options for symptomatic facet joint synovial cysts include surgical excision, facet joint steroid injections, and cyst aspiration. Herein, we report our experience of successfully rupturing a lumbar facet joint synovial cyst through a percutaneous approach with two needles using forceful pressure under C-arm fluoroscopic guidance.

Silica-Based Advanced Nanoparticles For Treating Ischemic Disease.

Recently, various attempts have been made to apply diverse types of nanoparticles in biotechnology. Silica nanoparticles (SNPs) have been highlighted and studied for their selective accumulation in diseased parts, strong physical and chemical stability, and low cytotoxicity. SNPs, in particular, are very suitable for use in drug delivery and bioimaging, and have been sought as a treatment for ischemic diseases.

A rare case of acute meningitis shortly after lumbar selective nerve root block: a case report.

A 57-year-old man underwent lumbar selective nerve root block (SNRB) for low back pain and lower radiating pain caused by left-sided L4 disc herniation. He presented to the emergency department with fever, headache and aggravated low back pain approximately 3 hours after the procedure. Infection was suspected; hence, blood tests, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) tests, lumbar magnetic resonance imaging, and brain computed tomography were performed.

Objective: Anesthesia preoperative evaluation clinics (APECs) are currently operating in several South Korean hospitals. While several studies have investigated the impact of APEC operations on the length of total hospital stay (LTHS), few have investigated their impact on the length of preoperative hospital stay (LPHS) for patients. Ostwald Ripening Rate of Orange Oil Emulsions: Effects of Molecular Structure of Emulsifiers and Their Oil Composition.

Ostwald ripening, one of the frequently observed instability of flavor oil emulsions, can be easily prevented by adding triacylglycerols to the oil phase. The effect of interfacial characteristics of the emulsion droplets (particularly thickness) on the effectiveness of triacylglycerol inhibition of Ostwald ripening was evaluated in this study. The prepared emulsions were stabilized with emulsifiers with different-size hydrophilic groups, which correlate to droplet interfacial thickness.
