High-temperature wastewaters can themselves activate peroxydisulfate (PDS) to remove aromatic contaminants via polymerization. This, however, may result in an insufficient carbon source for denitrification during biochemical treatment, and the formed polymers, without a proper reuse method, will be costly to handle as hazardous waste. This study demonstrates that the addition of NaOH can suppress the polymerization of aromatic contaminants, which is observed not only in simulated wastewater but also in actual coking wastewater (ACW).

Background: This study analyzed the epidemiological trends of three significant respiratory infectious diseases in Taiwan: invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD), influenza with severe complications, and tuberculosis during post-COVID-19 pandemic period.
Methods: We utilized data from Taiwan's Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website and classified the COVID-19 prevention policies into three phases for the year 2021, 2022, and 2023. We then performed a statistical analysis of reported case numbers for the three respiratory diseases during the 3-year period using the Kruskal-Wallis test, followed by joinpoint regression model for the identification of seasonal distribution and variation.
Background: The rice stem borer, Chilo suppressalis Walker (Lepidoptera: Crambidae), is a damaging pest of rice worldwide. Following the evolution of C. suppressalis resistance to diamide and abamectin insecticides, emamectin benzoate (EB) became a key insecticide for the control of this species in China.

To elucidate the variation patterns in the hydrochemical characteristics of karst groundwater in the Baiquan Spring area of Xingtai over the past 30 years, an integrated approach utilizing mathematical statistics, Piper trilinear diagrams, Gibbs diagrams, and ion ratio analyses was employed. Comparative analysis was conducted on 62 sets of karst water samples collected during the dry seasons of 1991 and 2020. The findings indicated that the groundwater in the spring area was generally weakly alkaline with a low salinization degree, predominantly characterized by Ca and HCO as the dominant ions.

Mitochondria, recognized as the powerhouse of cells, play a crucial role in tumorigenesis and progression. Inspired by the Nature's tyrosinase-catalyzed melanin formation within melanoma cells, here an approach is developed using a polysaccharide dually-functionalized with tyrosine and triphenylphosphine (TPP) for targeted mitochondria cross-linking in melanoma cells.

Methods: From January 2019 to October 2020, patients who underwent LBBAP and postoperative coronary angiography in the Second Affiliated Hospital of Nanchang University were included in the study. The patients' fluoroscopic images of LBBAP and coronary angiography were collected and analyzed.
Purpose: To evaluate the ventricular electrophysiologic effects of long-term stimulation of the left dorsal branch of thoracic nerve (LDTN) derived from the left stellate ganglion (LSG) in a canine model of chronic myocardial infarction (MI).
Methods: Seventeen adult male beagles were randomly divided into three groups: the sham group (sham operated, n = 6), the MI group (n = 6), and the MI + LDTN group (MI plus LDTN stimulation, n = 5). The canine model of chronic MI was induced by the occlusion of the left anterior descending artery (LADO).
Oral medication for ulcerative colitis (UC) is often hindered by challenges such as inadequate accumulation, limited penetration of mucus barriers, and the intricate task of mitigating excessive ROS and inflammatory cytokines. Here, we present a strategy involving sodium alginate microspheres (SAMs) incorporating M2 macrophage membrane (M2M)-coated Janus nanomotors (denominated as Motor@M2M) for targeted treatment of UC. SAM provides a protective barrier, ensuring that Motor@M2M withstands the harsh gastric milieu and exhibits controlled release.

We compared the dissemination and multidrug-resistance patterns of Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTBC) in the main urban area of Luoyang City, China (including six municipal jurisdictions) and nine county and township areas under its jurisdiction, aimed to establish the epidemiology of TB in this region and to provide reference for precision anti-TB in places with similar settings.
Methods: From 2020 to 2022, sputum samples were collected from 18,504 patients with confirmed, suspected and unexcluded TB in 10 designated TB medical institutions.

Background: Infections by non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) have become more common in recent years. () was first reported as an opportunistic pathogen in 2004, but there have been very few case reports since then. is a genus of aerobic and Gram-positive bacilli, and these species are also opportunistic pathogens and in the Mycobacteriales order.

However, there remain unclear fundamental issues on their carrier kinetics and the low-energy tail in their photoluminescence (PL) spectrum. In this paper, we synthesized CsPbBr NPLs with five [PbBr] monolayers and performed comprehensive studies by using steady-state absorption, PL, and femtosecond transient absorption (fs-TA) spectroscopic measurements.

Methods: A retrospective review of 488 subjects was performed (182 with Achilles tendon rupture, 306 controls with ankle sprains). Demographic variables and risk factors for rupture were tabulated and compared.
The use of digital twins (DTs) has proliferated across various fields and industries, with a recent surge in the healthcare sector. The concept of digital twin for health (DT4H) holds great promise to revolutionize the entire healthcare system, including management and delivery, disease treatment and prevention, and health well-being maintenance, ultimately improving human life. The rapid growth of big data and continuous advancement in data science (DS) and artificial intelligence (AI) have the potential to significantly expedite DT research and development by providing scientific expertise, essential data, and robust cybertechnology infrastructure.

Background: Peripheral nerve injury (PNI) presents a significant clinical challenge, leading to enduring sensory-motor impairments. While mesenchymal stem cell (MSC)-based therapy holds promise for PNI treatment, enhancing its neurotrophic effects remains crucial. Platelet-rich plasma-derived exosomes (PRP-Exo), rich in bioactive molecules for intercellular communication, offer potential for modulating cellular biological activity.

Mesenchymal stem cell (MSC)-based therapy is promising, but the problems of poor engraftment and insufficient neurotrophic effects need to be overcome. Herein, we isolated platelet-rich plasma-derived exosomes (PRP-Exos), which contain abundant bioactive molecules, and investigated their potential to increase the regenerative capacity of MSCs.

Here we show that intracellularly gelated macrophages (GMs) preserve cell membrane structures, including protein content, integration and fluidity, as well as the membrane lipid order. Consequently, in our testing GMs act as cellular sponges to efficiently neutralize various inflammatory cytokines via receptor-ligand interactions, and serve as immune cell-like carriers to selectively bind inflammatory cells in culture medium, even under a flow condition.

Frailty has also been associated with a range of adverse events, which might increase the risks of disability, falls, fractures, delirium and death. Increasing evidence has shown that multicomponent exercise training can improve physical and cognitive function, delay or reverse frailty.

Background: Phospholipases As (PLAs) are acyl hydrolases that catalyze the release of free fatty acids in phospholipids and play multiple functions in plant growth and development. The three families of PLAs are: PLA1, PLA2 (sPLA), and patatin-related PLA (pPLA). The diverse functions that pPLAs play in the growth and development of a broad range of plants have been demonstrated by prior studies.

The Junggar Basin in Xinjiang is located in the hinterland of Eurasia, where the groundwater is a significant resource and has important ecological functions. The introduction of harmful organic pollutants into groundwater from increasing human activities and rapid socioeconomic development may lead to groundwater pollution at various levels. Therefore, to develop an effective regulatory framework, establishing a list of priority control organic pollutants (PCOPs) is in urgent need.
