Objectives: To investigate the mechanism of PHPS1 for promoting apoptosis of oral squamous cell carcinoma cells and the role of AMPK in regulating tumor angiogenesis under hypoxic conditions.

Methods: Human oral squamous cell carcinoma Ca9-22 cells cultured in hypoxic conditions (1% O) were inoculated subcutaneously in 16 nude mice, which were divided into control group and PHPS1 group (8) for treatment with 10% DMSO and 10% PHPS1 respectively. Tumor growth in the mice was monitored till 14 days after the treatment, and the xenografts were examined pathologically using HE staining.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to evaluate how consistent the reflux symptom score (RSS) is with a salivary pepsin test for diagnosing laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) by testing both methods on patients.
  • A total of 67 patients were assessed, revealing a high LPR positivity rate for both the salivary pepsin test (71.64%) and RSS (70.15%), with strong statistical agreement between the two tests.
  • The RSS demonstrated good diagnostic performance for LPR, indicated by a high sensitivity (89.58%) and a strong area under the curve in ROC analysis, suggesting it can effectively screen for LPR in patients.

Introduction: Intercropping and soil properties both affect soil diazotrophic communities. However, the specific effects that alfalfa-maize intercropping has on diazotrophic networks and community diversity under different soil properties remain unclear.

Methods: In this study, we investigated the soil diazotrophic communities of two crop systems, alfalfa monoculture (AA) and alfalfa-maize intercropping (A/M), in two sites with similar climates but different soil properties (poor vs.

  • This study investigates the link between gut microbiota and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), focusing on how intermittent hypoxia influences microbiota diversity and functionality in adults.
  • Conducted with 113 individuals, including healthy controls and OSA patients with varying severity, the research analyzed fecal samples to compare microbiota characteristics, revealing decreased diversity and specific microbial abundances in OSA cases.
  • The findings suggest that increased nighttime desaturation levels in OSA patients correlate with significant changes in gut microbiota, highlighting the potential for these microbiota alterations as indicators in clinical practice.

  • * 249 patients were evaluated using cognitive tests (MMSE and MoCA) alongside measurements of their SUA and lipid levels (triglycerides, LDL-C, HDL-C, and total cholesterol).
  • * Findings revealed that higher SUA levels are associated with a lower risk of MCI in both PD and MSA, while lower total cholesterol levels might increase this risk in PD, underscoring the complex relationship between cognitive function and serum biomarkers in neurodegenerative diseases

Objective: Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) provoked by orthopedic trauma is increasing in pediatric hospitalized patients. The purpose of our study is to identify the prevalence of acute DVT in pediatric and adolescent orthopedic trauma hospitalized patients and focus on evaluating the anticoagulation strategies and the clinical outcomes after a confirmed acute DVT.

Methods: Patients (age ≤18 years) with a confirmed acute DVT admitted for orthopedic trauma between September 2017 and December 2023 were included.

Viruses play a crucial role in aquatic ecosystems by regulating microbial composition and impacting biogeochemical cycling. While the response of viral diversity to the trophic status has been preliminarily explored in lake ecosystems, there is limited integrated exploration of the biogeography of viruses, host associations, and the auxiliary metabolic genes (AMGs), particularly for plateau lakes. Therefore, this research investigated the viral biogeography, virus-host association, and AMGs in the surface waters of 11 lakes varying in trophic levels (eutrophic and oligo-mesotrophic) in the Yunnan-Guizhou plateau region of China.

Article Synopsis
  • The study evaluates the effectiveness and safety of switching from low-molecular-weight heparin (LMWH) to rivaroxaban for treating acute iliofemoral deep vein thrombosis (DVT) after one week of initial treatment.
  • Patients who switched to rivaroxaban early (within 7 days) had a significantly shorter hospital stay compared to those who switched later (more than 7 days), but there were no major differences in complications or mortality between the two groups.
  • The findings suggest that early switching to rivaroxaban is both effective and safe for managing acute iliofemoral DVT.

The SMALL ACIDIC PROTEIN (SMAP) gene is evolutionarily indispensable for organisms. There are two copies of the SMAP gene in the Arabidopsis thaliana genome, namely, SMAP1 and SMAP2. The function of SMAP2 is similar to that of SMAP1, and both can mediate 2,4-D responses in the root of Arabidopsis.

Zeaxanthin dipalmitate (ZD) is a chemical extracted from wolfberry that protects degenerated photoreceptors in mouse retina. However, the pure ZD is expensive and hard to produce. In this study, we developed a method to enrich ZD from wolfberry on a production line and examined whether it may also protect the degenerated mouse retina.

Although lncRNAs are recognized to contribute to the development of oral squamous-cell carcinoma (OSCC), their exact function in invasion and cell migration is not clear. In this research, we explored the molecular and cellular mechanisms of FOXD2-AS1 in OSCC. Prognostic and bioinformatics analyses were used to test for the differential expression of FOXD2-AS1-PLOD1.

Cement-stabilization of weak and soft soils is an efficient way for ground improvement. Traditional Portland cement remains the most popular cementitious material in practice, and thus, a proper dosage design of cement-stabilized soil is of practical interest to meet the sustainable engineering requirements and to remedy environmental concerns. Based on the unconfined compression test of cement-stabilized Qiantang River silty clay, the effects of cement content, mixing moisture content, mixing-water-to-cement ratio, and curing time on the unconfined compressive strength were investigated.

Catalytic pyrolysis is an effective means for high-value utilization of biomass. This study investigated the effect of solid base catalysts (CaO, calcium aluminate catalysts CaAl-1, CaAl-2, CaAl-3), acid zeolite catalysts (ZSM-5, Fe/ZSM-5, Co/ZSM-5, Ni/ZSM-5, Cu/ZSM-5, Zn/ZSM-5) and base-acid tandem catalysts on pine sawdust pyrolysis using Py-GC/MS. Acid zeolite catalysts exhibited robust deoxidation and aromatization capabilities, favoring aromatics, while solid base catalysts yielded more phenols and ketones.

  • This study investigates the link between lipid levels and orthostatic hypotension (OH) in patients with multiple system atrophy (MSA).
  • The research involved 580 MSA patients from multiple hospitals in China, examining how varying lipid levels relate to the severity of OH using tilt or stand tests.
  • Findings revealed that lower serum levels of total cholesterol, LDL-C, and triglycerides were associated with a higher risk of OH, particularly severe OH, indicating that these lipid levels can be important predictors in MSA patients.
