Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) continue to be the leading cause of deaths and disability worldwide and the major contributor is hypertension. Despite all the improvements in detecting hypertension together with technological advances and affordable, efficacious and relatively free of adverse effects anti-hypertensive agents, we continue to struggle to prevent the onset of hypertension and to control blood pressure (BP) to acceptable targets. The poor control of hypertension is commonly due to non-adherence to medications.

Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the association between total consumption of fruits (F), vegetables (V), and legumes (L) and their subgroups and hypertension risk in adults aged ≥ 40 years in the Cardiovascular Disease Association Study (CAVAS).

Methods: We analyzed data from 10,325 normotensive participants using cumulative average dietary consumption from repeated food frequency questionnaires during the follow-up. Incidence rate ratios (IRRs) were estimated with a modified Poisson regression model and a robust error estimator to evaluate the association between hypertension risk and total consumption of fruits, vegetables, and legumes, as well as their 17 subgroups.

Article Synopsis
  • * A total of 2,845 patients were monitored, revealing that both high and low systolic blood pressure (SBP) groups had increased risks of net adverse clinical events (NACE) and major adverse cardiac and cerebrovascular events (MACCE) over a 5-year follow-up.
  • * The research identified a J-curve relationship for both SBP and diastolic BP (DBP) regarding the risk of these clinical events, indicating that the optimal BP to minimize such risks is around

  • Anti-PD1/L1 immunotherapy has shown promise when combined with chemotherapy for advanced biliary tract cancer (BTC), yet no predictive biomarker has been identified for its effectiveness.
  • Researchers analyzed tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TIL) using AI-powered immune phenotype (AI-IP) analysis on tissue samples from 339 advanced BTC patients undergoing anti-PD1 treatment.
  • The study found that patients with an "inflamed" immune phenotype (high TIL) had significantly better treatment responses and survival rates compared to those with "noninflamed" phenotypes, suggesting AI-IP could be a useful predictor of outcomes for anti-PD1 therapy in BTC.

Background: The current standard approach to measuring home blood pressure (BP) involves taking measurements while sitting in a chair. In cultures where floor sitting is common, including Korea, assessing BP while sitting on the floor would be more feasible. However, there is still a lack of research investigating whether BP measurements obtained while seated in a chair and while sitting on the floor can be regarded as interchangeable.

Article Synopsis
  • Blood pressure measurement in children is critical for diagnosing hypertension, and with mercury sphygmomanometers being banned, it's essential to evaluate the accuracy of mercury-free options.
  • The study compared blood pressure measurements from mercury sphygmomanometers (MS), auscultatory devices (AD), and oscillometric devices (OD) in 104 participants aged 10-18, finding that AD showed strong concordance with MS, while OD had significant discrepancies, especially in diastolic blood pressure (DBP).
  • The findings suggest that AD may be a viable replacement for MS in hypertension screening, as it maintained close accuracy in comparison, while OD underestimated hypertension prevalence.

Nondestructive pathology based on three-dimensional (3D) optical microscopy holds promise as a complement to traditional destructive hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) stained slide-based pathology by providing cellular information in high throughput manner. However, conventional techniques provided superficial information only due to shallow imaging depths. Herein, we developed open-top two-photon light sheet microscopy (OT-TP-LSM) for intraoperative 3D pathology.

Article Synopsis
  • Lymphocyte-rich hepatocellular carcinoma (LR-HCC) is a rare subtype of liver cancer characterized by an immune-rich environment and the presence of tertiary lymphoid structures (TLS), which are important for cancer prognosis.
  • A study analyzed data from 191 liver cancer cases to compare LR-HCC with conventional hepatocellular carcinoma (C-HCC) and found that LR-HCC had larger tumors, higher grades, and more immune cell activity, leading to significantly better overall and recurrence-free survival rates.
  • The research highlights that LR-HCC is distinct from C-HCC at both clinical and molecular levels, suggesting that the presence of secondary follicles in tumors could serve as a valuable prognostic indicator for both types of cancer.

This review comprehensively examines the diverse spectrum of gastric cancers, focusing on unusual or uncommon histology that presents significant diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. While the predominant form, tubular adenocarcinoma, is well-characterized, this review focuses on lesser-known variants, including papillary adenocarcinoma, micropapillary carcinoma, adenosquamous carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), hepatoid adenocarcinoma, gastric choriocarcinoma, gastric carcinoma with lymphoid stroma, carcinosarcoma, gastroblastoma, parietal cell carcinoma, oncocytic adenocarcinoma, Paneth cell carcinoma, gastric adenocarcinoma of the fundic gland type, undifferentiated carcinoma, and extremely well-differentiated adenocarcinoma. Although these diseases have different nomenclatures characterized by distinct histopathological features, these phenotypes often overlap, making it difficult to draw clear boundaries.
