Melatonin (N-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine), a circadian-regulating hormone, has been reported to exert a protective role during acute kidney injury (AKI) induced by renal ischemia-reperfusion injury (I/R). High-mobility group box 1 (HMGB1) is a novel member of the damage-associated molecular pattern (DAMP) family, and has been verified to be an inflammatory cytokine mediating AKI induced by I/R and cisplatin.
