In neonatal hypoxic-ischemic brain damage (HIBD), in addition to damage caused by hypoxia and ischemia, over-activation of inflammation leads to further deterioration of the condition, thus greatly shortening the optimal treatment time window. Ischemic penumbra, the edematous area encompassing the infarct core, is characterized by typical activation of microglia and overt inflammation, and prone to incorporate into the infarct core gradually after ischemia onset. If treated in time, the cells located in the penumbra can survive, thereby impeding the expansion of the infarction.

Objective: To investigate the effects of selenium nanoparticles (nano-Se) combined with radiotherapy on the proliferation, migration, invasion, and apoptosis of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) A549 and NCI-H23 cells.

Methods: Nano-Se was synthesized and characterized by transmission electron microscope (TEM), X-ray diffractometer, and Ultraviolet-visible (UV)-Vis Spectroscopy, separately. The uptake of nano-Se by lung cancer cells was detected by flow cytometry.

It is well established that ncRNAs are emerging as important regulators in various types of cancers, however, their functions and contributions in cancers remain insufficiently defined. In this study, we reported the expression levels of a long noncoding RNA (lncRNA), named HSP90AA1-IT1 (HSP90AA1 intronic transcript 1), appeared to correlate with the pathological grades of gliomas and high level of HSP90AA1-IT1 indicated poor prognosis. Downregulation of HSP90AA1-IT1 in the glioma cell lines significantly suppressed cell viability, proliferation, EMT, invasion and migration in addition to an increase in apoptosis and aberrant cell cycle progression.

Cancer cells prefer glycolysis for energy metabolism, even when there is sufficient oxygen to make it unnecessary. This is called the Warburg effect, and it promotes tumorigenesis and malignant progression. In this study, we demonstrated that EZH2, a multifaceted oncogenic protein involved in tumor proliferation, invasion and metastasis, promotes glioblastoma tumorigenesis and malignant progression through activation of the Warburg effect.

Objective: This study is to investigate the expression of miRNA-1233 in placental tissue from patients with hypertensive disorder complicating pregnancy (HDCP) and its role in disease pathogenesis.

Methods: The expression levels of miRNA-1233 and HoxB3 in placental tissue from HDCP patients and normal control subjects, as well as in the in vitro trophoblast cells, were detected with real-time PCR and Western blot analysis. The proliferation and invasion abilities of trophoblast cells were assessed by the cell counting kit (CCK)-8 and transwell chamber assays, respectively.

The metabolism that sustains cancer cells is adapted preferentially to glycolysis, even under aerobic conditions (Warburg effect). This effect was one of the first alterations in cancer cells recognized as conferring a survival advantage. In this study, we show that gene associated with retinoid-interferon-induced mortality-19 (GRIM-19), which was previously identified as a tumor suppressor protein associated with growth inhibition and cell apoptosis, contributes to the switch between oxidative and glycolytic pathways.
