Surgical Therapy of Gastric Ulcer Disease.

Medical advancements, including Helicobacter pylori eradication and antisecretory agents, have reduced peptic ulcer disease (PUD)-associated hospital admissions, mortality, and surgical interventions over the past 30 years. Surgery plays an important role in the treatment of life-threatening complications of PUD, such as bleeding, perforation, and gastric outlet obstruction, as well as for disease that is refractory to medical management. The article highlights the critical role of surgery in cases where medical therapy is insufficient or in the event of emergency complications arising from PUD.

Evaluation of a stand-alone robotic camera holding system: technology that improves laparoscopy.

Introduction: In order to perform laparoscopic procedures, a surgeon requires an assistant to hold the camera. Problems with this approach include table crowding leading to poor ergonomics, and miscommunication leading to poor images. AutoLap is a novel FDA-approved camera navigation system.

We hypothesize that part of this variability may be predetermined by genetic differences associated with metabolic homeostasis. MicroRNA (miRNA) are short pieces of RNA that regulate gene expression and are readily detectable in serum.

Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy and Gastric Bypass for The Aging Population.

Background: Laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) and sleeve gastrectomy (SG) are the two most common bariatric surgeries for treating morbid obesity. The purpose of this study is to determine differences in outcomes from RYGB or SG between patients ages ≥ 60 years and < 60 years.

Methods: A retrospective review of patients who underwent RYGB and SG at our institution from 01/2008 to 05/2012 was conducted.

Validation and improvement of a proposed scoring system to detect retained common bile duct stones in gallstone pancreatitis.

Background: In 2009, a study from our institution used retrospective data and multivariate analysis to identify 5 quantitative variables and their cutoffs that have a positive predictive value (PPV) for common bile duct (CBD) stones in gallstone pancreatitis. They also proposed a management protocol based on the scoring system. This prospective study sought to validate that scoring system.

Ileal j pouch complications and surgical solutions: a review.

Ileal pouch-anal anastomosis is currently accepted as the standard method to restore continence after total proctocolectomy for medically refractory ulcerative colitis and familial adenomatous polyposis. Ileal pouches offer improved quality of life and high patient satisfaction; however, there are many pouch-related complications due to the original disease process and change in anatomy. This is a review article of the common and some rare surgical complications after J pouches, which can be subdivided into the septic and nonseptic categories.

Paraneoplastic glomerulopathy secondary to retroperitoneal sarcoma: a case report.

Glomerulopathy is a rare form of paraneoplastic disease. We present the second reported case of paraneoplastic glomerulopathy due to a retroperitoneal sarcoma. The patient presented with generalized edema and nephrotic syndrome.
