Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) is a side effect that occurs after treatment for systemic diseases. However, most institutions currently rely on empirical methods to make diagnosis and treatment plans, and there is a lack of consensus or guidelines for the classification, staging and treatment of MRONJ in China. To address this gap and improve prognosis, an expert panel representing 11 renowned domestic medical colleges and affiliated hospitals in China was convened.

Article Synopsis
  • Autophagy, which can have both beneficial and harmful effects, plays a complex role in medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ), with its mechanisms still unclear.
  • A study showed that autophagic flux is hindered in the gingival epithelium of MRONJ patients, and apoptosis is elevated, suggesting both processes contribute to the disease's development.
  • Research identified that activating autophagy using a RAB7 activator in mouse models could improve gingival healing and potentially prevent MRONJ, indicating a link between autophagy recovery and disease prevention.

Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) is a severe disease with unclear pathogenesis. Adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (MSC(AT)s) serve as a special source for cell therapy. Herein, we explored whether exosomes (Exo) derived from MSC(AT)s promote primary gingival wound healing and prevent MRONJ.

Background: Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) is a serious debilitating disease caused by anti-resorption and anti-angiogenesis drugs, significantly affecting patients' quality of life. Recent studies suggested that primary gingival wound healing may effectively prevent the development of MRONJ. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of low-level light therapy (LLLT) on promoting gingival wound healing in extraction sockets of MRONJ-like mice and preventing the occurrence of MRONJ.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study conducted a Genome-Wide Association Study (GWAS) on chronic spontaneous urticaria (CSU) in Chinese Han adults to identify genetic risk factors, using a discovery cohort of 430 CSU cases and 482 healthy controls, and validating findings in another cohort of 800 cases and 900 controls.
  • - Five significant single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were identified, which are linked to autoimmune diseases and involved in immune cell functioning, suggesting a genetic connection between CSU and autoimmunity.
  • - The research concluded that CSU has a genetic overlap with autoimmune disorders, indicating that higher polygenic risk scores and specific allele frequencies are related to autoimmune CSU characteristics rather than traditional atopic traits.

Chronic diffuse sclerosing osteomyelitis of the mandible (DSOM) and fibrous dysplasia (FD) are distinct lesions with overlapping clinicopathological features that complicate their diagnosis. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of GNAS mutation analysis in differentiating between these two conditions. DNA samples from patients with DSOM (n = 35) and FD (n = 29) were collected to analyze the presence of GNAS mutations in exons 8 and 9, the two previously reported hotspot regions, using polymerase chain reaction and direct sequencing.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the prevalence of IgE and IgG anti-thyroid autoantibodies (AAbs) in Chinese patients with chronic spontaneous urticaria (CSU) and how these antibodies relate to clinical and laboratory factors.
  • It finds that CSU patients have significantly higher rates of positive anti-thyroid antibodies compared to healthy controls, suggesting a potential link to the condition.
  • The research also indicates that these autoantibodies vary together and can be predictors for cases of CSU that do not respond to antihistamines, providing further evidence for their role in the disease's immunopathogenesis.
