Alzheimer's disease (AD) is an age-related neurological disorder. Currently, there is no effective cure for AD due to its complexity in pathogenesis. In light of the complex pathogenesis of AD, the traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) formula Kai-Xin-San (KXS), which was used for amnesia treatment, has been proved to improve cognitive function in AD animal models.

New phenolic glycosides from Bunge and their antioxidant activity.

ABATRACTNine compounds, five phenolic glycosides (, , ), three phenylpropanoids (), and a furanone glycoside (), were isolated from aqueous soluble extract of the dried roots of Bunge. The structures of new compounds () were elucidated by comprehensive spectroscopic data analysis as well as chemical evidence. Pulsatillanin A () demonstrated significant antioxidant effects through scavenging free radical in DPPH assay, and relieved the oxidative stress in LPS-induced RAW 264.

[Effects of controlled release blend bulk urea on soil nitrogen and soil enzyme activity in wheat and rice fields].

A field experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of controlled-release fertilizer (CRF) combined with urea (UR) on the soil fertility and environment in wheat-rice rotation system. Changes in four forms of nitrogen (total nitrogen, ammonium nitrogen, nitrate nitrogen, and microbial biomass nitrogen) and in activities of three soil enzymes participating in nitrogen transformation (urease, protease, and nitrate reductase) were measured in seven fertilization treatments (no fertilization, routine fertilization, 10%CRF+90%UR, 20%CRF+80%UR, 40%CRF+60%UR, 80%CRF+20%UR, and 100%CRF). The results showed that soil total nitrogen was stable in the whole growth period of wheat and rice.

[Changes of HPAA in Different Rat Models of Gan Stagnation, Pi Deficiency, Gan Stagnation Pi Defi- ciency and Interventional Effect of Chaishu Sijun Decoction].

Objective: To compare changes of hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis (HPAA) in different rat models of Gan stagnation (GS), Pi deficiency (PD), Gan stagnation Pi deficiency (GSPD) syndromes, and to observe interventional effect of Chaishu Sijun Decoction (CSD, capable of soothing Gan-qi invigorating Pi) on them.

Methods: Seventy Wistar rats were divided into the normal control group (group 1), the GS group (group 2), the PD group (group 3), the GSPD group (group 4), the GS intervention group (group 5), the PD intervention group (group 6), and the GSPD intervention group (group 7) according to random digit table, 10 in each group. Rats in group 1 received no treatment.

Methylotrophic bacteria are widespread microbes which can use one carbon compound as their only carbon and energy sources. Here we report the finished, annotated genome sequence of the methylotrophic bacterium Methylovorus sp. strain MP688, which was isolated from soil for high-level production of pyrroloquinolone quinone (PQQ) in our lab.

Effect of aspirin on high glucose-induced senescence of endothelial cells.

Background: Endothelial cell senescence is accelerated under high glucose condition, which may contribute to the vascular complications in the diabetics. It has been proved that aspirin has multiple cytoprotective effects. This study aimed to investigate the effect of aspirin on high glucose-induced endothelial cell senescence and its possible mechanism.

Background And Objective: The effect of gefitinib on advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) was various. How to choose the sensitive patients and improve the effect was difficulty in clinic. This study was to assess the correlation of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutations and HER2/3 protein expression with the effect of gefitinib on Chinese patients with advanced NSCLC.

Background: To assess the role of various epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutations and HER2/3 protein expression as predictive markers of responsiveness to gefitinib therapy in Chinese patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).

Methods: A total of 106 Chinese NSCLC patients who had failed at least one chemotherapy regimen received gefitinib 250 mg once daily. All the 106 tumors from these patients were screened for mutations in the EGFR exons 18-24, and 84 tumors were studied by immunohistochemistry for HER2/3 expression and correlated with clinical treatment outcome.

[Polymorphisms of UGT1A gene and irinotecan toxicity in Chinese colorectal cancer patients].

Objective: To assess the polymorphism of UGT1A gene in Chinese, and to investigate the correlation between UGT1A polymorphism and irinotecan toxicity in colorectal cancer patients.

Methods: 70 patients with advanced colorectal cancer were treated with irinotecan and 5-fluorouracil. Polymorphism analysis was performed in all those patients and 100 healthy subjects.

[EGFR mutation predicts response and prognosis in iressa-treated advanced-stage non-small cell lung cancer].

Objective: To investigate the correlation between mutation in EGFR tyrosine kinase domain and tumor response as well as prognosis in advanced stage non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) treated with iressa.

Methods: From May 2002 to Feb. 2005, iressa was orally administered at a dose of 250 mg once daily for 106 advanced stage NSCLC patients until occurrence of disease progression or intolerable toxicity.
