Article Synopsis
  • * A study using a rat model induced with lithium-pilocarpine examined changes in the hippocampus, revealing 27 differentially expressed proteins related to synaptic plasticity and structure after 2 weeks of spontaneous seizures.
  • * Findings showed significant upregulation of certain proteins and increased dendritic spines, suggesting that synaptic remodeling plays a key role in the development of TLE, offering insights for further research on synaptic plasticity in this condition.

Temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) is a common chronic neurological disease that is often invulnerable to anti-epileptic drugs. Increasing data have demonstrated that acetylcholine (ACh) and cholinergic neurotransmission are involved in the pathophysiology of epilepsy. Cytisine, a full agonist of α7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (α7nAChRs) and a partial agonist of α4β2nAChRs, has been widely applied for smoking cessation and has shown neuroprotection in neurological diseases.
