Chemosensory proteins of the eastern honeybee, Apis cerana: Identification, tissue distribution and olfactory related functional characterization.

Chemosensory proteins (CSPs), a class of small soluble proteins, are thought to be involved in insect chemoreceptive behavior. Here, six CSP genes, AcerCSP1-6 from Apis cerana, were cloned and characterized from worker bees' antennae. Results revealed that the AcerCSPs' amino acid sequences shared high similarity with the homologous genes of Apis mellifera, but low similarity with other insect species.

Immobilization of ALA-Zn(II) Coordination Polymer Pro-photosensitizers on Magnetite Colloidal Supraparticles for Target Photodynamic Therapy of Bladder Cancer.

5-Aminolevulinic acid (ALA) is a widely used photodynamic therapy (PDT) prodrug in the clinic. It can be metalized to the photosensitizer PpIX, which produces toxic singlet oxygen to kill cancer cells upon visible light irradiation. Herein, a core/shell-structured vehicle is designed to comprise magnetite colloidal supraparticles (MCSPs) as cores and ALA-Zn(II) coordination polymers as shells (Fe3O4@ALA-Zn(II) ) for target pro-photosensitizer delivery.

Self-sacrificial template-induced modulation of conjugated microporous polymer microcapsules and shape-dependent enhanced photothermal efficiency for ablation of cancer cells.

The one-step synthesis of nanoscale conjugated microporous polymer (NCMP) capsules is presented by using PMAA microspheres as self-sacrificial templates. Precise control over the morphology, nanostructure and shell thickness makes the NCMPs have a tunable NIR absorption ability and a shape-dependent photothermal conversion efficiency. Upon exposure to 808 nm light, they rapidly generate heat (NCMP concentration: 100 μg mL(-1)) and cause thermal ablation of HeLa cells with less than 10% viability.

Genomic landscapes of breast fibroepithelial tumors.

Breast fibroepithelial tumors comprise a heterogeneous spectrum of pathological entities, from benign fibroadenomas to malignant phyllodes tumors. Although MED12 mutations have been frequently found in fibroadenomas and phyllodes tumors, the landscapes of genetic alterations across the fibroepithelial tumor spectrum remain unclear. Here, by performing exome sequencing of 22 phyllodes tumors followed by targeted sequencing of 100 breast fibroepithelial tumors, we observed three distinct somatic mutation patterns.

miR-506 Inhibits Epithelial-to-Mesenchymal Transition and Angiogenesis in Gastric Cancer.

Gastric cancer is one of the most common malignancies in developing countries. We examined the possible role of miR-506 in gastric cancer, investigated its associations with the clinical outcomes of gastric cancer patients, and explored its potential role in angiogenesis and the metastasis of gastric cancer cells. We found that miR-506 expression was a useful marker for stratifying patients from early to advanced clinical stages and for overall survival prediction.

Neonicotinoid insecticide interact with honeybee odorant-binding protein: Implication for olfactory dysfunction.

The decline of bee population has caused great concern in recent years. A noticeable factor points to the neonicotinoid insecticides, which remain in the nectar and pollen of plants and impair the olfactory cognition of foraging bees. However, it remains elusive that if and how neonicotinoid insecticides interact with the olfactory system of bees.

Are serum chemerin levels different between obese and non-obese polycystic ovary syndrome women?

The objective of this study is to measure serum chemerin levels in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and assess their relationship with clinical, metabolic, and hormonal parameters. One hundred eighteen PCOS women and 114 healthy women were recruited in this study. Their blood pressure, body mass index (BMI), waist circumference and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), fasting insulin (FIN), fasting plasma glucose (FPG), blood serum sex hormone, and blood lipid were measured.

MiR-186 suppresses the growth and metastasis of bladder cancer by targeting NSBP1.

Background: Increasing evidence has shown that microRNAs function as oncogenes or tumor suppressors in human malignancies, but the roles of miR-186 in human bladder cancer (BC) is still unclear.

Methods: First, quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR) was performed to detect miR-186 expression in bladder cancer tissues and cell lines. Then, Bioinformatics analysis, combined with luciferase reporter assay demonstrated the target gene of miR-186.

The effect of immediate surgical bipolar plasmakinetic transurethral resection of the prostate on prostatic hyperplasia with acute urinary retention.

In the present study, we evaluated the safety and efficacy of immediate surgical bipolar plasmakinetic transurethral resection of the prostate (PK-TURP) for patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) with acute urinary retention (AUR). We conducted a retrospective analysis of clinical data of BPH patients who received PK-TURP. A total of 1126 BPH patients were divided into AUR (n = 348) and non-AUR groups (n = 778).

Effect of Ang-2-VEGF-A Bispecific Antibody in Renal Cell Carcinoma.

The blockade of VEGF pathway has been clinically validated as an initial treatment for renal cell carcinoma (RCC). Angiopoietin-2 (Ang-2) has been indicated as a key regulator for angiogenesis escape. The effect of a novel bispecific antibody (A2V CrossMab) against both Ang-2 and VEGF was investigated in comparison with either factor.

Ataxin-3 like (ATXN3L), a member of the Josephin family of deubiquitinating enzymes, promotes breast cancer proliferation by deubiquitinating Krüppel-like factor 5 (KLF5).

The Krüppel-like factor 5 (KLF5) has been suggested to promote breast cell proliferation, survival and tumorigenesis. KLF5 protein degradation is increased by several E3 ubiquitin ligases, including WWP1 and SCFFbw7, through the ubiquitin-proteasome pathway. However, the deubiquitinase (DUB) of KLF5 has not been demonstrated.

MED12 is frequently mutated in breast phyllodes tumours: a study of 112 cases.

Aim: To determine the frequency of MED12 mutations in a series of 112 breast phyllodes tumours, and to correlate the findings with clinicopathological parameters and survival outcomes.

Methods: Phyllodes tumours from the Department of Pathology, Singapore General Hospital, were classified into benign, borderline and malignant categories. Genomic DNA from formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded phyllodes tumours was extracted, purified and subjected to ultra-deep-targeted amplicon sequencing across exon 2 of the MED12 gene.

Introduction: Hemorrhage is a major complication after percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL). In the current study, we analyzed the risk factors for severe bleeding after PCNL.

Material And Methods: Medical records of 982 consecutive patients undergoing PCNL at the Department of Urology, the Third Xiangya Hospital, were reviewed.

To investigate the influences of host genotype and environment on Bifidobacterium longum subsp. longum inhabiting human intestines at the strain level, six pairs of twins, divided into two groups (children and adults), were recruited. Each group consisted of two monozygotic (MZ) twin pairs and one dizygotic (DZ) twin pair.

Bifidobacteria are common inhabitants of the human gastrointestinal tract, and their application has increased dramatically in recent years due to their health-promoting effects. The ability of bifidobacteria to tolerate acidic environments is particularly important for their function as probiotics because they encounter such environments in food products and during passage through the gastrointestinal tract. In this study, we generated a derivative, Bifidobacterium breve BB8dpH, which displayed a stable, acid-resistant phenotype.

Parecoxib: an enhancer of radiation therapy for colorectal cancer.

Background: To study the effect of parecoxib, a novel cyclooxygenase-2 selective inhibitor, on the radiation response of colorectal cancer (CRC) cells and its underlying mechanisms.

Materials And Methods: Both in vitro colony formation and apoptosis assays as well as in vivo mouse xenograft experiments were used to explore the radiosensitizing effects of parecoxib in human HCT116 and HT29 CRC cells.

Results: Parecoxib sensitized CRC cells to radiation in vitro with a sensitivity enhancement ratio of 1.

Synovial sarcoma: Magnetic resonance and computed tomography imaging features and differential diagnostic considerations.

The present study retrospectively examined 24 cases of pathologically confirmed synovial sarcoma and analyzed the clinical presentation and imaging findings in order to explore the imaging features of synovial sarcoma. The majority of the lesions were large (>5 cm; 88%), rounded or lobulated, relatively well-defined tumor masses in the extremities near the joints or deeply located. On computed tomography (CT) scans, the lesions demonstrated intensity signals similar to those of muscle.

[Role of Th17/Treg imbalance in the immune pathogenesis and treatment of children with aplastic anemia].

Objective: To study the role of Th17/Treg imbalance in the immune pathogenesis and therapeutic significance in childhood aplastic anemia (AA).

Method: We analyzed data from 43 children (male: female = 14: 29) with AA, all the cases were at the age of 2 to 14 years at diagnosis, and were hospitalized at our department of pediatrics between January 2012 and October 2013 in the Second Hospital of Anhui Medical University. All these patients were divided into 2 groups, severe AA (SAA) group (n = 25, male: female = 8: 17, 2-14 years old) and non-severe AA (NSAA) group (n = 18, male: female = 6: 12, 2-14 years old), depending on the severity at first diagnosis.

IL-25 is an important immune regulator that can promote Th2 immune response-dependent immunity, inflammation, and tissue repair in asthma, intestinal infection, and autoimmune diseases. In this study, we examined the effects of IL-25 in renal ischemic/reperfusion injury (IRI). Treating IRI mice with IL-25 significantly improved renal function and reduced renal injury.

Inhibition of placental growth factor in renal cell carcinoma.

Background/aim: Placental growth factor (PlGF) is up-regulated in major malignant diseases or following antiangiogenic therapy, although it is present in low levels under normal physiological conditions. TB403, a monoclonal antibody against PlGF, was investigated in clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) xenografts since it has been proposed as a potential target in oncology.

Materials And Methods: Human ccRCCs were implanted in athymic nude mice to evaluate the efficacy of TB403 and to excise xenograft tumors for molecular experiments.

WWOX suppresses KLF5 expression and breast cancer cell growth.

The WW domain-containing oxidoreductase (WWOX) is a tumor suppressor in a variety of cancers, including breast cancer. Reduced WWOX expression is associated with the basal-like subtype and a relatively poor disease-free survival rate among breast cancer patients. Though several WWOX partners have been identified, the functional mechanisms of WWOX's role in cancers have not been fully addressed to date.
