The present study was undertaken to characterize recent field isolates of infectious bursal disease virus (IBDV) by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and partial sequencing of VP2 gene. The virus could be detected in 17 of 20 field samples from broiler chickens in Haryana state, India as well as in all the four vaccine strains. Nucleotide sequences of four field isolates and one vaccine strain were compared with 10 reported IBDV strains from different parts of the world.

One hundred fifty 1-d-old quail chicks (Coturnix coturnix japonica) were divided into 2 groups. The 2 groups were designated as controls (CX) and fumonisin-fed birds (FX) with each containing 50 and 100 chicks, respectively. The birds in group CX were maintained on quail mash alone, whereas the birds in group FX were maintained on diets supplemented with 300 ppm of fumonisin B1 from Fusarium verticillioides (formerly Fusarium moniliforme) culture material from 1 d.

Two cases of HIV-1 infection demonstrating lack of sensitivity of rapid and ELISA screening tests are being reported. The first case was that of a 23 years old female whose recent infection was picked up by ELISA (Tetra ELISA) test but missed by two rapid tests (Comb AIDS and HIV Tridot). The 2nd case presumably too in early seroconversion phase, was that of a 39 years old male.

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is a parenterally transmitted virus that poses an occupational hazard to the health care workers (HCWs). No significant data are available regarding the prevalence of HCV in health care workers in India. The present study was designed to determine the seroprevalence of HCV infection in health care workers in a tertiary care centre in New Delhi.

One group was maintained on quail mash alone, while Fusarium moniliforme culture material was added to quail mash in the second group from day 5 of age and was supplied at a rate of 150 ppm fumonisin B1 (FB1)/kg mash. At day 21, each group was further subdivided into two groups, yielding four groups with 75 birds apiece, which served as the control (group CX), the Salmonella Gallinarum alone group (group CS), the FB1 alone group (group FX), and the group fed FB1 and infected with Salmonella Gallinarum (group FS).

The chicks were fed culture material containing FB1 from day 5 till the end of the experiment.

A total of 580 females (200 in prepubertal age and 380 in reproductive age group) were screened for primary rubella infection. Rubella specific serology (IgM and IgG) was studied by ELISA using commercially available diagnostic kits. IgM seropositivity was observed in 56 of 200 females (28%) of prepubertal age and 26 of 380 females (6.

Patients with steroid-resistant nephrotic syndrome often have an unsatisfactory long-term outcome and are at risk of developing chronic renal failure. We prospectively treated 65 children with idiopathic steroid-resistant nephrotic syndrome and focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) with intravenous pulses of corticosteroids and oral cyclophosphamide. Dexamethasone (5 mg/kg) or methylprednisolone (30 mg/kg) was administered intravenously, initially 6 pulses on alternate days, followed by 4 fortnightly and 8 monthly pulses.

Initial management of septic shock entails urgent and emergent stabilization of the patient followed by broad-spectrum, empiric antibiotic therapy. After volume resuscitation, vasopressors or inotropic therapy or both may be necessary to restore perfusion.
