Leaf dark respiration is an important component of carbon cycle. Understanding the differences of leaf dark respiration and light inhibition between saplings and mature trees is important for accurate estimation of ecosystem gross primary productivity (GPP). We meansured leaf dark respiration of saplings and mature trees of two dominant species (Pinus koraiensis and Tilia amurensis) in light and in darkness in the broadleaved-Korean pine mixed forest on Changbai Mountain.

By field trials, the canopy hyperspectral reflectance and chlorophyll content (SPAD) for winter wheat during 2010 and 2011 growth periods were measured by the ASD portable spectrometer and portable chlorophyll meter SPAD-502, respectively. The canopy spectral characteristics of different SPAD values were analyzed in different growth periods. The winter wheat SPAD estimation models based on normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), ratio vegetation index (RVI) and wavelet energy coefficients were established in different growth periods.

An efficient synthesis of benzo[f]indole-4,9-diones has been achieved by copper(II)-catalyzed naphthoquinone sequential C,N-difunctionalization reactions with β-enaminones. New C-C and C-N bonds are easily formed in the reaction course. Copper(II) salt plays a dual role as Lewis acid and oxidative catalyst, and O2 acts as the terminal oxidant.

The source and sink effect of terrestrial plants is one of the hotspots in terrestrial ecosystem research under the background of global change. Dark respiration of terrestrial plants accounts for a large fraction of total net carbon balance, playing an important role in the research of carbon cycle under global climate change. However, there is little study on plant dark respiration.

Benzo[f]pyrido[1,2-a]indole-6,11-diones have been synthesized in high yields by copper(II)-catalyzed three-component reactions of acyl bromide, 1,4-naphthoquinone, and pyridine (or isoquinoline) via sp(2)-C-H difunctionalization of naphthoquinone followed by intramolecular cyclization and oxidative aromatization. In an attempt to expand the reaction scope and to help clarify the reaction mechanism, 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds are used in place of acyl bromides to take part in this reaction, and the benzo[f]pyrido[1,2-a]indole-6,11-diones derivatives are also obtained in excellent yields.

Article Synopsis
  • A study screened 17 Chinese soils for copper (Cu) toxicity using a nitrification assay to inform the development of a terrestrial biotic ligand model (tBLM).
  • Significant variations in median effective concentration (EC50) values for both total Cu (46.9-2726 mg/kg) and solution Cu (0.04-2.91 mg/L) were found among the soils.
  • Factors like calcium and soil pH were strong predictors for total Cu-based EC50, while magnesium showed a protective effect against Cu toxicity, and leaching altered Cu toxicity profiles in the soils without being predictable by soil properties.
