Article Synopsis
  • The study analyzed 1,105 nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) cases and 1,430 normal controls from Hunan province, China, to investigate associations with human leukocyte antigen (HLA) variants.
  • Strong positive links were found between NPC and certain HLA alleles (like HLA-B*46:01), while five rare alleles showed strong negative associations, suggesting they may confer protection against NPC.
  • A significant difference in antivirus capsid antigen immunoglobulin A (anti-VCA IgA) levels was noted between NPC cases and controls, but no direct link was found between HLA-B variations and these antibody levels; the results highlight unique genetic factors influencing NPC risk in southern Chinese populations.

Autosomal genetic markers and Y chromosome markers have been widely applied in analysis of mixed stains at crime scenes by forensic scientists. However, true genotype combinations are often difficult to distinguish using autosomal markers when similar amounts of DNA are contributed by multiple donors. In addition, specific individuals cannot be determined by Y chromosomal markers because male relatives share the same Y chromosome.

Aim: To introduce a novel approach in removal of anterior chamber angle foreign body (ACFB) using a prism contact lens and 23-gauge foreign body forceps.

Methods: Data of 42 eyes of 42 patients who had undergone removal of ACFB using a prism contact lens and 23-gauge foreign body forceps from January 2008 to October 2013 were collected and analyzed. Twenty eyes in group A received the conventional approach by using toothed forceps through corneal limbus incision, and 22 eyes in group B underwent the novel method through the opposite corneal limbus incision.

Deletion of major histocompatibility complex class I chain-related genes A (MICA*Del) was investigated in 3,411 DNA samples from two southern Chinese Han populations (Hunan Han, HNH; Guangdong Han, GDH), two northern Chinese populations (Inner Mongolia Han, IMH; Inner Mongolia Mongol, IMM) and one southeastern Chinese Han population (Fujian Han, FJH) using an in-house polymerase chain reaction-sequence specific priming (PCR-SSP) assay, which enables direct discrimination between heterozygote and homozygote for MICA*Del. MICA*Del showed a frequency ranging from 0.8% in FJH to 5.

In this study, copy number variation (CNV) of NKG2C gene was investigated in 1129 normal, unrelated individuals representing two southern Chinese Han populations (Hunan Han and Guangdong Han), two northern Chinese populations (Inner Mongolia Han and Inner Mongolia Mongol) and one southeastern Chinese Han population (Fujian Han) using polymerase chain reaction-sequence-specific priming (PCR-SSP) method. CNV of NKG2C gene did not vary significantly among the five Chinese populations, with NKG2C gene deletion showing a frequency ranging from 0.2031 to 0.

In this study, we investigated the killer cell immunoglobulin-like receptor (KIR) genes and HLA-C1/C2 dimorphism in 819 healthy, unrelated individuals composed of two southern Chinese Han populations (Hunan Han and Guangdong Han) and two northern Chinese populations (Inner Mongolia Han and Inner Mongolia Mongol), using polymerase chain reaction-sequence-specific priming (PCR-SSP) method. Fifty-one Chinese families were used to determine KIR haplotypic configuration. Our data showed that KIR2DL4, KIR3DL2, KIR3DL3, and KIR3DP1 genes were present in all of the 819 individuals.

Objective: To explore the methods for identification of sibling brothers with Y-STR locus mutation by detection of genetic markers on autosome and Y-biallelic.

Methods: Goldeneye 20A and 18NC kit were used to genotyped the 35 STRs on autosome from two men. PowerPlex Y kit and Yfiler kit were used to genotyped the 16 STRs on Y chromosome full sibling index was calculated by ITO method.

Aim: To study the tear film stability after lamellar keratoplasty.

Methods: Five female and eight male patients with lamellar keratoconus, aged from 18 to 32, were involved. After lamellar keratoplasty, Schirmer I test(S I t), tear break-up time(BUT) test, fluorescein staining test were used to judge the effect of the surgery at different time point.

Variations in environmental factors instigate significant changes in the physiology and behavior of animals, necessary for their survival. The present study investigated the hypothesis that ambient temperature is a cue capable of inducing changes in body mass, energy intake, and thermogenic capacity. Moreover, the current study determined the potential role of leptin in regulating adaptive thermogenesis in tree shrews (Tupaia belangeri).

Major histocompatibility complex class I chain-related gene B (MICB) has only been characterized for allelic variation in very few human populations. The MICB polymorphism remains largely unknown in Chinese populations. In this study, 104 healthy unrelated Han subjects recruited from central Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, northern China, were investigated by sequence-based typing for MICB allelic variation, the association of MICB alleles with AluyMICB insertion/deletion dimorphism located in MICB intron 1, linkage disequilibrium of MICB with human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-B and MICA, and HLA-A-C-B-MICA-MICB haplotypic diversity.

In this study, 201 healthy, unrelated Han subjects in Hunan province, southern China, were investigated by sequence-based typing (SBT) for the allelic variation of the human major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I chain-related gene A (MICA). Nineteen MICA alleles were observed, among which MICA*008:01 predominated with gene frequency of 30.35%.

Objective: To explore the genetic variations of HLA-Cw and 5 KIR2D loci in 2 Chinese Han populations residing at Southern and Northern mainland China, respectively, and to investigate the HLA-Cw polymorphism of a Mongolian Chinese population.

Methods: HLA-Cw genotyping was performed in a total of 293 healthy individuals including 1 Southern Han population living in Hunan Province (n=112), 1 Northern Han population (n=98) and 1 Mongolian Chinese population(n=83) in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, using polymerase chain reaction-sequence specific primer(PCR-SSP) technique. Dimorphism at residue 80 of domain in the HLA-Cw molecule was examined by an additional set of PCR-SSP reactions.
