Article Synopsis
  • Digital mucous cysts (DMCs) are benign growths found in finger joints and around nails, and existing treatments often lead to recurrences due to a lack of standardized guidelines.* -
  • This study analyzed the results of a new treatment method that combines surgical deroofing with trichloroacetic acid on 27 patients over a few years, documenting their clinical responses and histopathological findings.* -
  • Results showed 17 out of 27 patients had complete remission with minimal complications, suggesting that this combined approach is effective and safer for managing chronic DMCs, even allowing for follow-up treatments.*

Xanthoma disseminatum is a rare form of non-Langerhans cell histiocytosis with limited treatment options due to its unknown aetiology and diffuse skin lesions. This case report presents the successful treatment of a 31-year-old male with severe pan-facial xanthoma disseminatum lesions following a facial burn and traumatic brain injury resulting from a car accident. After 5 sessions of monthly pulsed dye laser treatment, there was a clinically significant reduction in the lesions.

Objective: Although several studies have reported successful fusion rates after oblique lumbar interbody fusion (OLIF) using allografts or dimerized bone matrix (DBM) instead of autografts, whether OLIF can achieve satisfactory solid fusion without the use of autografts remains unclear. This study investigated the real fusion rates after OLIF using allografts and DBM, which were evaluated using both dynamic radiographs and computed tomography scans.

Methods: We enrolled 79 consecutive patients who underwent minimally invasive OLIF followed by percutaneous pedicle screw fixation.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how the metabolic characteristics of thyroid cancer vary based on molecular subtypes determined by mutations, specifically BRAF-like, RAS-like, and ATC-like cancers.
  • Using multi-omics analysis, researchers found that metabolic properties differ between differentiated thyroid cancers (PTC-B and FTC-R) but are similar in dedifferentiated types (ATC-B/R).
  • The results highlight specific metabolic pathways and vulnerabilities, suggesting potential targeted therapies for advanced thyroid cancer based on these metabolic differences.

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigated temporomandibular joint (TMJ) luxation in 21 cats from 2000-2018, focusing on causes, symptoms, treatment, and outcomes.
  • The main causes of TMJ luxation included dog altercations (38%), car accidents (19%), and falls (19%), with a high success rate of 94.7% for treatment.
  • Early intervention leads to a positive prognosis, but complications like permanent malocclusion can occur; thorough examinations are essential for cats with head trauma.

Article Synopsis
  • The text discusses anaplastic large-cell lymphoma (ALCL), its histological variants, and focuses on a specific case of neutrophil-rich ALCL that recurred in a patient.
  • The 63-year-old male patient had previously been diagnosed with abdominal primary cutaneous ALCL, which later progressed to systemic ALCL after a recurrence.
  • Neutrophil-rich ALCL is a rare subtype characterized by CD30-positive tumor cells and significant neutrophil infiltration, known for responding well to treatment but having a tendency to relapse.

In modern clinical practice, earlobe keloids demonstrate a high cure rate through surgical intervention and suitable adjuvant therapies. Furthermore, the concurrence of keloids and epidermoid cysts is uncommon, potentially attributed to the lack of skin appendages within keloid tissue. This case report presents the successful treatment of a recurrent earlobe keloid through the removal of concealed underlying epidermoid cysts.

EWS RNA binding protein 1 (EWSR1) is a multifunctional protein whose epigenetic signatures contribute to the pathogenesis of various human diseases, such as neurodegenerative disorders, skin development, and tumorigenic processes. However, the specific cellular functions and physiological characteristics of EWSR1 remain unclear. In this study, we used quantitative mass spectrometry-based proteomics with tandem mass tag labeling to investigate the global proteome changes in brain tissue in Ewsr1 knockout and wild-type mice.

Background: Alopecia areata (AA) is common non-scarring hair loss disease. Sleep distrubance has been regarded as a triggering or aggravating factor for AA. However, objective evaluation of sleep disturbance and its clinical effect on AA has not been clearly demonstrated.

Until recently, the most standard treatment for sensorineural or sudden hearing loss, which is caused by inner ear damage or deterioration, has been systemic oral steroid administration. In recent, intratympanic steroid injections such as dexamethasone have been used for the treatment of sudden hearing loss as well. It is injected into the tympanic cavity through its membrane and is expected to diffuse over the round window located between the tympanic cavity and the inner ear.

Intratympanic (IT) steroid treatment is one of the most widely used and effective treatments for inner ear disorders such as sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL). However, a clear mechanism of IT steroids in inner ear recovery has not yet been revealed. Therefore, we investigated proteome changes in extracted human perilymph after steroid treatment.

Obesity associated with a Western diet such as a high-fat diet (HFD) is a known risk factor for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and colorectal cancer (CRC). In this study, we aimed to develop fecal microbiome data-based deep learning algorithms for the risk assessment of colorectal diseases. The effects of a HFD and a candidate food (, NF) on IBD and CRC risk reduction were also evaluated.

Background: Recently, stereotactic ablative radiotherapy (SABR) has been adopted to non-invasively treat catheter ablation-refractory ventricular tachycardia (VT). VT episodes have been dramatically reduced after SABR, within weeks; however the underlying mechanisms of these clinical effects and potential mediators of early anti-arrhythmic effect remain unclear.

Methods: In this study, cardiac tissue was harvested from non-irradiated control (0 Gy), conventional irradiated control (2 Gy), and radioablative test (25 Gy) rat groups after 3 and 7 days of irradiation.

The occurrence of malignant tumor in proximity to an arthroplasty prosthesis has been a matter of debate since it was first reported in 1978. Upon considering the number of orthopedic implants used, the occurrence of malignancy is rare. Especially in case of angiosarcoma, only a few cases have been reported worldwide.

Palisading encapsulated neuroma is a rare, benign, cutaneous nerve sheath tumor. It usually occurs as an asymptomatic solitary skin-colored papule and commonly affects the nose and cheeks. Sometimes, it involves other sites, including the shoulder, upper arm, and trunk, but rarely involves the oral mucosa, including that of the lip.

Background: Oral alitretinoin is effective in the treatment of chronic hand eczema (CHE), and ≥12 weeks of alitretinoin treatment has been shown to be effective in Korean patients. However, in the real world, a considerable number of patients discontinue alitretinoin, which leads to treatment failure.

Objective: To evaluate the compliance rate of alitretinoin treatment and explore common reasons for poor compliance in patients with CHE in the real world.

Background: Computed tomography urography (CTU), based on the excretion of contrast medium after its injection, allows visualization of the renal parenchyma and the renal collecting system.

Objectives: To determine the optimal contrast medium dose allocation ratio to apply in split-bolus CTU in dogs.

Methods: This prospective, experimental, exploratory study used 8 beagles.

Congenital triangular alopecia (CTA) is a form of circumscribed, noncicatricial, and noninflammatory hair loss. It manifests as a triangular or oval-shaped alopecic patch on the frontotemporal region of the scalp and rarely involves the temporoparietal or occipital area. That is why it is also called temporal triangular alopecia.
