Decompressive craniectomy is one of the most common procedures for managing severe traumatic brain injury. Cranioplasty plays a vital role in restoring the integrity of the skull and preventing complications that may arise after a decompressive craniectomy. This case report presents a 24-year-old woman who underwent cranioplasty with a cryopreserved autologous bone flap.

Poly(l-lactic acid) (PLA) is a biodegradable bioplastic with limited marine degradation. This study examines the impact of molecular weight on PLA's marine biodegradability. We synthesized PLA with terminal hydroxyl groups (PLA-OH) with degrees of polymerization (DP) between 14 and 642 and conducted biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) tests.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of middle meningeal artery embolization (MMAE) in elderly high-risk patients with symptomatic chronic subdural hematoma (CSDH) in terms of reduction in hematoma volume and recurrence rate.

Methods: We retrospectively reviewed data prospectively collected from nine patients who underwent 13 MMAE for CSDH between June 2017 and May 2022. The volume of the subdural hematoma was measured using a computer-aided volumetric analysis program.

Background & Aims: Low serum HDL cholesterol (HDL-C) concentration is a risk factor for cardiovascular diseases and it is influenced by genetic and environmental factors. We hypothesized that genetic variants that decrease serum HDL-C concentrations may interact with nutrient intakes in ways that increase or decrease the risk of cardiovascular disease.

Methods: Candidate genetic variants that can lower serum HDL-C concentrations were explored by genome-wide association studies (GWAS), after adjusting for covariates, in the Ansan/Ansung cohort (n = 8842) from KoGES.

Background: We explored the genetic variants that were associated with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) by genome-wide association study (GWAS) and evaluated the association of genetic risk scores (GRS) of the selected genetic variants with insulin resistance and the interaction of the GRS with nutrient intake to develop insulin resistance.

Methods: The 6 genetic variants involved in brain and nervous system (acid sensing ion channel subunit 2 rs8071961, rs1988598, and rs16589, macro domain containing 2 rs7262810 CHRM3 rs1867265 and chromosome 2 open reading frame 83 rs11889798) were selected from a GWAS of the PCOS study. GRS of the 6 single nucleotide polymorphisms was calculated in 3,723 Korean women in the Ansan/Ansung cohort of KARE study.

Objective: The interrelation between TSH, thyroid hormones and metabolic parameters is complex and has not been confirmed. This study aimed to determine the association of TSH and thyroid hormones in euthyroid subjects and the relationship between thyroid function and metabolic risk factors. Furthermore, this study examined whether thyroid function has predictive power for metabolic syndrome.

Background: The melanocortin-4 receptor (MC4R) regulates metabolism by modulating eating behavior and MC4R variants (rs17782313 and rs571312) are associated with obesity in Asians and Caucasians. However, the impact of their interactions with nutritional and lifestyle factors on obesity are poorly described. Therefore, we investigated the interaction of MC4R variants and dietary patterns on the risk of obesity in Korean middle-aged adults.

Human languages may be more than completely arbitrary symbolic systems. A growing literature supports sound symbolism, or the existence of consistent, intuitive relationships between speech sounds and specific concepts. Prior work establishes that these sound-to-meaning mappings can shape language-related judgments and decisions, but do their effects generalize beyond merely the linguistic and truly color how we navigate our environment? We examine this possibility, relating a predominant sound symbolic distinction (vowel frontness) to a novel associate (spatial proximity) in five studies.

Few studies have explored the source of infants' ordinal knowledge, and those that have are equivocal regarding the underlying representational system. The present study sought clear evidence that the approximate number system, which underlies children's cardinal knowledge, may also support ordinal knowledge in infancy; 10 - to 12-month-old infants' were tested with large sets (>3) in an ordinal choice task in which they were asked to choose between two hidden sets of food items. The difficulty of the comparison varied as a function of the ratio between the sets.

During operations, neurosurgeons usually perform multiple temporary occlusions of parental artery, possibly resulting in the neuronal damage. It is generally thought that neuronal damage by cerebral ischemia is associated with extracellular concentrations of the excitatory amino acids. In this study, we measured the dynamics of extracellular glutamate release in 11 vessel occlusion (VO) model to compare between single occlusion and repeated transient occlusions within short interval.

Septal extension grafts are performed in order to correct the conformation of the nasal tip and columella. The more strongly the graft is fixed to the columellar L-strut of the septal cartilage, the better is the outcome of grafting. This article reports the development of a vertical figure-of-eight locking suture technique and its biomechanical comparison with other suture techniques.
