Given the substantial π-electron delocalization observed in 4--dimethylamino-4--methyl-stilbazolium tosylate (DAST), a high third-order nonlinear optical response can be expected that might manifest itself in various ways for potential applications. Unlabelled: Solid tumors possess heterogeneous metabolic microenvironments where oxygen and nutrient availability are plentiful (fertile regions) or scarce (arid regions). Quantitative subcellular metabolomic measurements can explain the roles of metabolites in cellular processes but are subject to multiple confounding factors. We developed stable isotope labeling of essential nutrients in cell culture-subcellular fractionation (SILEC-SF), which uses isotope-labeled internal standard controls that are present throughout fractionation and processing to quantify acyl-coenzyme A (acyl-CoA) thioesters in subcellular compartments by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. We tested SILEC-SF in a range of sample types and examined the compartmentalized responses to oxygen tension, cellular differentiation, and nutrient availability.

Unlabelled: Clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) is characterized by large intracellular lipid droplets containing free and esterified cholesterol; however, the functional significance of cholesterol accumulation in ccRCC cells is unknown. We demonstrate that, surprisingly, genes encoding cholesterol biosynthetic enzymes are repressed in ccRCC, suggesting a dependency on exogenous cholesterol. Mendelian randomization analyses based on 31,000 individuals indicate a causal link between elevated circulating high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol and ccRCC risk.

Titanium dioxide (TiO)-multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) thin films were prepared and studied systematically for the effects of the concentration of MWCNTs on the electro-optical properties. Semiconductor nanocrystalline heterostructures can be produced by the immersion of semiconductor substrates into an aqueous precursor solution, but this approach usually leads to a high density of interfacial traps. In this work, we study the effect of a chemical passivation of the substrate prior to the nanocrystalline growth. PbS nanoplatelets grown on sulfur-treated InP (001) surfaces at temperatures as low as 95 °C exhibit abrupt crystalline interfaces that allow a direct and reproducible electron transfer to the InP substrate through the nanometer-thick nanoplatelets with scanning tunnelling spectroscopy.

Recent efforts by both academic and pharmaceutical researchers have focused on the HIV-1 capsid (CA) protein as a new therapeutic target. The piezoelectric and elastic properties of a molecular piezoelectric -nitroaniline (mNA) in its single-crystal form were investigated in the framework of first-principles density functional perturbation theory (DFPT). Results support the recent experimental findings those despite being soft and flexible, mNA's piezoelectric coefficients are an order of magnitude greater than that of ZnO and LiNbO. A molecular-level insight into the piezoelectric properties of mNA is provided.

We report on the voltage-dependent SHG signal obtained in a reduced-graphene oxide (rGO)/p-type Si heterointerface. A simple qualitative model considering the interaction between the heterointerface depletion region potential and the naturally occurring surface dipole layer on the rGO is introduced to account for the characteristics of the SHG signal, specifically, a minimum point at ≈ -3 V bias on the rGO side of the interface. This feature-rich system has the potential to provide field-controllable surface-dipole moments and second-order nonlinearities, which may find applications in tunable nonlinear photonic devices for realizing second-harmonic generation and optical-rectification.
