Background: Surgical site infection (SSI) rates in elective colorectal surgery remain high due to intraoperative exposure of colonic bacteria at the surgical site. We aimed to evaluate 30-day SSI outcomes of a novel wound retractor that combines barrier protection with continuous wound irrigation in elective colorectal resection.

Materials And Methods: A retrospective single-center cohort-matched analysis included all patients undergoing elective colorectal resection utilizing the novel irrigating wound protector (IWP) from April 2015 to July 2019.

Unlabelled: Distal thumb injuries are common in high construction load regions, and it is a challenging task for the plastic surgeon to find the optimum choice that preserves thumb length and provides a sensory substitute to the lost tissue. Introducing first dorsal metacarpal artery flap has solved the dilemma. One drawback is that the flap is susceptible to distal necrosis, which can happen because of tight tunneling or insufficient venous drainage.

Interlocked grain occurs when the orientation of xylem fibres oscillates, alternating between left- and right-handed spirals in successive wood layers. The cellular mechanisms giving rise to interlocked grain, thought to involve the slow rotation of fusiform initials within the vascular cambium, remain unclear. We suggest that observations of wood structure at the cellular level, but over large areas, might reveal these mechanisms.

Fibrillary glomerulonephritis (FGN) is a rare cause of rapidly progressive glomerulonephritis (RPGN). We report a case of FGN in which the patient presented with a clinical pulmonary-renal syndrome and whose kidney biopsy showed > 90% crescents on light microscopy. Immunofluorescence microscopy showed pseudo-linear IgG and C3 staining of the glomerular capillary walls resulting in an initial diagnosis of crescentic glomerulonephritis of anti-glomerular basement membrane (anti-GBM) antibody etiology.

This presentation is to increase awareness of the potential for brachial plexus injury during prolonged combined plastic surgery procedures. A case of brachial plexus neuropraxia in a 26-year-old obese patient following a prolonged combined plastic surgery procedure was encountered. Nerve palsy due to faulty positioning on the operating table is commonly seen over the elbow and popliteal fossa.

Background: An inverse relationship between brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) levels and body mass index (BMI) has been described for patients with left ventricular (LV) systolic dysfunction. In this study, the association of BMI, BNP levels and mortality in patients hospitalized for heart failure with preserved LV systolic function (HFpLVF) was investigated.

Methods: One hundred fifty consecutive patients (98% men) who were hospitalized with HFpLVF and had BNP levels measured on admission were analyzed.

Anomalous coronary arteries pose a great challenge during percutaneous intervention due to various technical factors. Inadequate guide support leads to significant obstacles for delivery of interventional devices to stenotic areas. Several methods have been proposed to overcome these obstacles.

Purpose: To present pilot toxicity and survival outcomes for a prospective trial investigating adaptive radiotherapy (ART) for oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma.

Methods And Materials: A total of 24 patients were enrolled in an institutional review board-approved clinical trial; data for 22 of these patients were analyzed. Daily CT-guided setup and deformable image registration permitted serial mapping of clinical target volumes and avoidance structures for ART planning.

Background: The purpose of this investigation was to determine if disruption of the colonic epithelium during Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) is associated with bacteraemia due to secondary bacterial invasion by enteric organisms.

Methods: We reviewed the medical records of 505 randomly selected individuals from a database of patients who tested positive for C. difficile toxin and identified bacteraemias that occurred in 2 periods-the pre-CDI and post-CDI periods.

Objective: To determine whether an earlier determination of staphylococcal species and their antibiotic susceptibility decreases unnecessary antistaphylococcal treatment and/or facilitates earlier appropriate treatment.

Methods: We used the Xpert MRSA/SA BC system (Cepheid) for immediate determination of species and their drug susceptibility in patients whose blood cultures revealed gram-positive cocci in clusters. We compared the treatment of patients whose physicians received early notification of these results (group 1) with the treatment of patients in a historical cohort with delayed reporting after traditional microbiological studies (group 2).

Purpose: Stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) is increasingly being used to treat thoracic tumors. We attempted here to identify dose-volume parameters that predict chest wall toxicity (pain and skin reactions) in patients receiving thoracic SBRT.

Patients And Methods: We screened a database of patients treated with SBRT between August 2004 and August 2008 to find patients with pulmonary tumors within 2.
