Background: Osteoarticular tuberculosis represents 9-20% of extrapulmonary forms and spinal tuberculosis is its most common form.

Clinical Cases: We present three cases of tuberculous spondylitis in patients aged 22, 36 and 68 years, with 8, 6 and 6 months of evolution and with involvement of L5-S1, T7-T8 and T5-T6, respectively. The two younger patients had disc involvement, and in the first case a pyogenic abscess was initially suspected.

Objective: The objective of this study is to elucidate the clinical and demographic profiles, as well as perioperative outcomes, of patients undergoing surgery for non-hiatal diaphragmatic hernias. Additionally, it aims to analyse these outcomes based on the surgical approach employed (transthoracic versus transabdominal).

Methods: This retrospective, observational study was conducted at a single center and involved patients diagnosed with non-hiatal diaphragmatic hernia who underwent either emergency or elective surgery between July 2007 and March 2023.

For the 40 years after the end of commercial whaling in 1976, humpback whale populations in the North Pacific Ocean exhibited a prolonged period of recovery. Using mark-recapture methods on the largest individual photo-identification dataset ever assembled for a cetacean, we estimated annual ocean-basin-wide abundance for the species from 2002 through 2021. Trends in annual estimates describe strong post-whaling era population recovery from 16 875 (± 5955) in 2002 to a peak abundance estimate of 33 488 (± 4455) in 2012.

Schwannomas are benign sheaths of Schwann cells that can present with degenerative and morphological changes; necrosis or hemorrhage are rare findings in these tumors. We present the case of a 28-year-old man with a C2-C4 cervical Schwannoma who experienced upper limb paresthesia in 2020 while presenting with COVID-19 symptoms. The patient later recovered and came to our institution, where surgery was scheduled one year after the initial diagnosis.

Article Synopsis
  • * The dataset covers 13 regions and includes data on 27,956 unique humpback whales from 2001-2021, with an impressive identification accuracy of 97-99% using advanced machine learning.
  • * This resource aims to facilitate collaborative research on humpback whales and their habitats, especially as the ocean undergoes significant ecological changes.

Purpose: Oct3/4 a transcription factor is involved in maintaining the characteristics of cancer stem cells. Oct3/4 can be expressed differentially with respect to the progression of cervical cancer (CC). In addition, Oct3/4 can give rise to three isoforms by alternative splicing of the mRNA Oct3/4A, Oct3/4B and Oct3/4B1.

Olive oil is a key component of the highly cardiovascular protective Mediterranean diet. (-)-Oleocanthal (OLC) is one of the most interesting phenolics present in virgin olive oil, and is formed from secoiridoid ligustroside during the processing of olives to yield the oil. Anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties were identified shortly after OLC isolation, followed by the discovery of anti-tumor activities in a few non-hematopoietic cell lineages.

Minimally invasive anatomical sublobar resections have gained relevance in recent years mainly due to advances in imaging techniques, screening programs and the increase in second neoplasms. Accurate identification of the segmental or subsegmental bronchus is vital to guarantee optimal results in segmentectomies and subsegmentectomies. Given the complexity and the possibility of anatomical variations, several authors have published different methods to identify the target bronchus.

Introduction: The objective of this study is to create a predictive model of prolonged postoperative length of stay (PLOS) in patients undergoing anatomic lung resection, to validate it in an external series and to evaluate the influence of PLOS on readmission and 90-day mortality.

Methods: All patients registered in the GEVATS database discharged after the intervention were included. We define PLOS as the postoperative stay in days above the 75th percentile of stay for all patients in the series.

Introduction: Failure to rescue (FTR), defined as the mortality rate among patients suffering from postoperative complications, is considered an indicator of the quality of surgical care. The aim of this study was to investigate the risk factors associated with FTR after anatomical lung resections.

Method: Patients undergoing anatomical lung resection at our center between 1994 and 2018 were included in the study.

Introduction: To analyze the predictors of pCR in NSCLC patients who underwent anatomical lung resection after induction therapy and to evaluate the postoperative results of these patients.

Methods: All patients prospectively registered in the database of the GE-VATS working group undergone anatomic lung resection by NSCLC after induction treatment and recruited between 12/20/2016 and 3/20/2018 were included in the study. The population was divided into two groups: patients who obtained a complete pathological response after induction (pCR) and patients who did not obtain a complete pathological response after induction (non-pCR).

Metabolic reprogramming is typical in cancerous cells and is required for proliferation and cellular survival. In addition, oncoproteins of high-risk human papillomavirus (HR-HPV) are involved in this process. This study evaluated the relationship between glucose transporter I (GLUT1), lactate dehydrogenase A (LDHA), and monocarboxylate transporter type 4 (MCT4) expression and cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) and invasive cervical carcinoma (ICC) with HR-HPV infection.

Persistent infection with the human papillomavirus 16 (HPV 16) is the cause of half of all cervical carcinomas (CC) cases. Moreover, mutations in the oncoproteins E6 and E7 are associated with CC development. In this study, E6/E7 variants circulating in southern Mexico and their association with CC and its precursor lesions were evaluated.

YKL-40, also known as chitinase-3-like protein 1 (CHI3L1), is an inflammatory glycoprotein secreted by different types of cells, such as inflammatory cells. The levels of this protein are elevated in the serum or plasma of patients with different types of cancer, and high concentrations are associated with poor prognosis and short survival in patients with liver, breast, lung, bladder and endometrial cancers. In Mexico, acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is the most common type of cancer affecting the pediatric population.

Purines are ubiquitous structures in cell biology involved in a multitude of cellular processes, because of which substituted purines and analogs are considered excellent scaffolds in drug design. In this study, we explored the key structural features of a purine-based proapoptotic hit, 8-tert-butyl-9-phenyl-6-benzyloxy-9H-purine (1), by setting up a library of 6-alkoxy purines with the aim of elucidating the structural requirements that govern its biological activity and to study the cell selectivity of this chemotype. This was done by a phenotypic screening approach based on cell cycle analysis of a panel of six human cancer cell lines, including T cell leukemia Jurkat cells.

Introduction: Robotic surgery has become a safe and effective approach for the treatment of pulmonary surgical pathology. However, the adoption of new surgical techniques requires the evaluation of the learning curve. The objective of this study is to analyze the learning curve of robotic anatomical lung resections.

Objectives: This analysis aimed to evaluate perioperative outcomes of surgical resection following neoadjuvant treatment with chemotherapy plus nivolumab in resectable stage IIIA non-small-cell lung cancer.

Methods: Eligible patients received neoadjuvant chemotherapy (paclitaxel + carboplatin) plus nivolumab for 3 cycles. Reassessment of the tumour was carried out after treatment and patients with at least stable disease as best response underwent pulmonary resection.

Here, we evaluated the effects of PEDF (pigment epithelium-derived factor) and PEDF peptides on cone-photoreceptor cell damage in a mouse model of focal LED-induced phototoxicity (LIP) in vivo. Swiss mice were dark-adapted overnight, anesthetized, and their left eyes were exposed to a blue LED placed over the cornea. Immediately after, intravitreal injection of PEDF, PEDF-peptide fragments 17-mer, 17-mer[H105A] or 17-mer[R99A] (all at 10 pmol) were administered into the left eye of each animal.
